(Rightsizing) Should I use 10-day or 30-day recommendations?

Users often ask which time span they should use when reflecting on Rightsizing recommendations - 10 days or 30 days?  The answer : Both, for different reasons!

Okay, I know that I probably just confused a lot of people.  Hang in there, because I'm going to give you some examples of why each is beneficial.  There are more reasons than just what I'm listing.  If you have some examples, respond to this thread and let us know!

The 30-day Recommendations can provide deeper richer data for a recommendation than the 10-day equivalent.  Because there are as many as 3x more data points, you may find more spikes or valleys in the metrics we're tracking (in the details panel).  30-day recommendations are a great place to start because it will give you more confidence that the system's performance will remain at a specific level over a longer period of time.

The 10-day Recommendations reflect changes more quickly than 30-day recommendations.  10 days still covers more than a week of data, so you can analyze whether a system requires more resources on Tuesday mornings than the rest of the week.  This is especially helpful for newer instances that may not have been online for a full 30-days yet, but still needs to have its performance analyzed to ensure the most cost avoidance possible!

You may find that some products (such as AWS S3) only have 30-day recommendations.  This is most often because the service is better analyzed over a longer period of time.  Continuing the AWS S3 example, 30 days of data allows us to better visualize how much data is stored in each S3 storage class as well as whether there have been recent charges for pulling back data from colder storage (such as Glacier) too early.

Which do you prefer - 10 day or 30 day recommendations?  Do you have any special tricks you implement to further analyze resources before taking Rightsizing actions?  We want to hear from you in the comments below!
