  • 1.  Restore an AIX V6.1 in WPAR on Power8

    Hello,

    We have a AIX V6.1 (6100-06-12-1339) running an old application. We cannot updta eto the latest level to migrate on Power8( Application doesn't work with this level).

    It's hosted on Power7(9117-MMB).

    We need to move this last partition on Power8, but each time I try to restore the mksysb in a WPAR hosted on AIX V7.1-7.2 LPAR,I have the following message  :

     x            0 ./DIGITAL_ENGINE
    x            0 ./mnt
        total size: 5563874160
        files restored: 104533
    populate: 0960-667 The operating system level within the workload partition is not supported.
    mkwpar: 0960-396 Failed to populate workload partition lpar1.

    The LPAR can be with AIX V7.2 or V7.1, it's the same message.

    I cannot have support from IBM and don't find documentation about the mistake I should do.

    Does anyone have more information to complete this restore so I can host the 6.1 LPAR in a new WPAR on Power 8 please?

    Hi
    There should be no reason for AIX 6.1 not to work on power 8 as an lpar.
    At worse change your CPU from default to power 7

    Hello,

    Due to old version of Firmware in the Power8, we cannot migrate(LPM) or move the LPAR with the current 6.1TL6SP12-1339.

    It's why I'm trying to create an LPAR with 7.1-7.2 to host a WPAR with the AIX V6.1 mksysb.

    In parallel, I'm trying to find a AIX V6.1 update compatible with the current Power8. It should be between TL6-SP12 and the latest TL9...

    Hi

    I think you need to apply latest ML 09 for aix 6.1 (your appl does not work so you can not update). Apart from that, you can create the target Lpar in power7 compatible mode and try.

    Hello,

    If I try to move the LPAR from Power7 to Power8, the system works and stop with 'internal error'(But the LPAR is still alive.

    And the current LPAR is currently defined as 'Power7 processor mode compatible'... But I will try to force this compatibility mode with a clone of the LPAR.
