Then there are hundreds of third party products for monitoring the status of a group of machines.

If detecting such outages is important to you then you need to decide what it is you want to monitor and how you want to be informed (on a web page, SMS message, eamil, support desk problem ticket etc.) and then select a suitable product to suite our needs and pocket.

You can always do email/page (with the right HW) from the script.

I have used some of the products mentioned in this thread and they are quite
useful but things don't always have to be complicated to get the job done.
Although it all depends on your requirements which I'm not totally clear from

I think maybe I need to talk to the manager to figure out remote monitoring plan for such event, not just for the AIX servers, but for other servers on site as well. I have never worked as a Sys Admin or AIX admin before I joined here. Can you provide a sample script? With which HW is associated?
