  • 1.  Regarding sender channel status in IBM MQ 9.4.05

    Posted Tue November 12, 2024 03:16 PM

    Hi,

    I hope this message finds you well. I am reaching out because I have recently installed IBM MQ 9.4.0.5 on RHEL 8.10 and have configured queue manager to queue manager communication. I have set up a sender channel and receiver channel on the RHEL system, and similarly, a receiver and sender channel on a Windows system.

    Initially, the sender channel from the RHEL system to the Windows system started successfully. However, after some time, the channel became inactive and entered retry mode. I attempted to start the sender channel from the Windows system, but it also went into retry mode and never started. Currently, I am facing an issue where both channels are stuck in retrying mode.

    Please find below the error logs from both the Linux and Windows systems (IBM MQ 9.2).

    Linux error log:

    linux
    AMQ9202E: Remote host not available, retry later.

    EXPLANATION:
    The attempt to allocate a conversation using TCP/IP to host '***.19.59.***
    (1414)' for channel DL01JDE6MQBL_TWCOV9J was not successful. However the error
    may be a transitory one and it may be possible to successfully allocate a
    TCP/IP conversation later.

    In some cases the remote host cannot be determined and so is shown as '????'.
    ACTION:
    Try the connection again later. If the failure persists, record the error
    values and contact your systems administrator. The return code from TCP/IP is
    110 (X'6E'). The reason for the failure may be that this host cannot reach the
    destination host. It may also be possible that the listening program at host
    '***.19.59.*** (1414)' was not running.  If this is the case, perform the
    relevant operations to start the TCP/IP listening program, and try again.

    Hi Brajendra,

    Sorry to hear that your sender channels are having problems and are currently in RETRY status. From the error messages you have shown, this appears to be a network problem. Your sender channel, DL01JDE6MQBL_TWCOV9J, has reported that it's attempt to connect to the partner queue manager found at host '***.19.59.***(1414)' resulted in TCP/IP giving the error code 110 (X'6E'). If you look up this number you will find that it means ETIMEDOUT which means that a connection timed out before it could be established, and usually means that there is a network issue.

    Are you certain that the host machine found at "***.19.59.***" is available? Can you TCP ping this IP address? Is the MQ listener for that queue manager definitively running?

    If any of these things have problems then the MQ sender channel will not be able to start. Until those things are fixed, the MQ channel will continue to retry. You should fix those things first and then your MQ channel will be able to run again.

    Cheers,
    Morag

    P.S. You have underlined the phrase "in some cases the host name cannot be determined and so is shown as '????'" in some of your error message text. This text is ALWAYS present in the message in order to explain that sometimes the prior insert contains ????. In all your examples the prior insert does not contain '????' and actually shows the hostname for the partner, and so you can ignore this sentence as it is not relevant to your message text.

    Hi Morag,

    Thank you very much for your quick response. I appreciate your insights into our current issue with the sender channels being stuck in RETRY status.

    I have verified that the MQ listener is indeed running and have conducted a ping test with both the hostname and the IP address. Below are the results of the ping test:

    ```
    TWCOV9JMPLB01.na.ad.*.com
    PING TWCOV9JMPLB01.na.ad.*.com (*.19.59.*) 56(84) bytes of data.
    64 bytes from *.19.59.* (*.19.59.*): icmp_seq=1 ttl=125 time=22.6 ms
    64 bytes from *.19.59.* (*.19.59.*): icmp_seq=2 ttl=125 time=21.7 ms
    64 bytes from *.19.59.* (*.19.59.*): icmp_seq=3 ttl=125 time=21.2 ms
    64 bytes from *.19.59.* (*.19.59.*): icmp_seq=4 ttl=125 time=21.8 ms
    64 bytes from *.19.59.* (*.19.59.*): icmp_seq=5 ttl=125 time=23.3 ms
    ```

    Given that the network connectivity seems to be functioning properly, I am wondering if there might be any other underlying issues that could be causing this problem. I have used both the IP address and the hostname in the connection channel configuration but am still encountering the same issue.

    Could you provide further guidance or suggest additional steps we might take to resolve this issue? Thank you again for your assistance.

    Best regards,

    Brajendra Kumar

    Hi Brajendra,

    The other possibility is your firewall. Ping may be allowed through where other traffic is not. Please check on this too. Ask your network admins what has changed recently. Most recent change is usually the culprit!

    Cheers,
    Morag

    You can test the connectivity between the two hosts using the telnet (client):

    telnet MQHost MQPort

    where MQHost is the MQ server you are trying to reach (DNS or IP) and MQPort is the port the MQ Listener holds open.

    If the telnet is successful ctrl+] + enter and quit will get you out of it.

    If the telnet is not successful, you will not be able to get an MQ channel working until the network problem (firewall?) is resolved.

    Please verify if the firewall on the RHEL system is running (firewalld deamon).

    Hope it helps

    Thank you very much for your assistance. I have checked, and it appears that the port is not open.
