    Hello .

I would like to recovery test for AIX7.3 rootvg. Do you have any document as recovery procedure for AIX system backup (rootvg) by LTO tape ? I can not found it on any website.

Alradey I got system backup command as "smitty mksysb" to LTO tape. There is  HMC in our environment.  The HMC connect to both production and test AIX server. I will use  test AIX server to recovery test for AIX7.3 rootvg . The test AIX server has internal disk and internal LTO tape drive.

    Best regards

    Hello Osoegawa-san

I have a log file when I tested mksysb/restore using USB memory as a backup media.

It is not using Tape, but the operations required are almost the same.

The only difference is that you select Tape on the screen below p4.

If you can understand Japanese, please see the attached file......

The attached file may not be uploaded, so please see the qiita link

    Hello YUKARI-san

Thank you for your answer. I read this article.

However, I do not understand how to go to the system console when before input these commands. I have a recovery prodedure to old version that how to go before input any commands. But It not able to work at AIX7.3 new system.

Recovery prodedure to old version as following (for crrent AIX server)

    1. Press Server power botton. (IBM logo is displayed)
    2. Next message displayed as [POST indicator]
    3. A beep sound comes from the AIX server. Then alternately press F5 and 5 botton soon and it repeat a few times.
    4. Next message displayed as [Please define the System Console] [Press a F1 and press Enter to use this the system console]

I can not go to Step 4.

I do not understand whether I need to connect to the new server from HMC. If the console of the new server starts, I might be able to enter the SMS console directly.

    Best regards

    Hi,

I think you need to go SMS menu firstly.

Please try to press F1 key or (Esc key and 1 key)  right after you saw the IBM logo, then you can go the SMS menu.

After that, you can select booting from tape on the SMS menu.

The message "Please define the System Console" will be shown by booting from Tape.

    Hi YUKARI-san,

I did not any opereation directly. Our enginner did restore to rootvg successfully.
So I do not know that detail of procedure.

I am conveying the procedures developed by YUKARI-san to our engineers. However, it seems that the original procedures did not work well, so they looked into additional steps.

I received feedback from our engineers on the outline of the procedures as following.

    1, HMC login

2, Click [HMC actions] menu => [Open restricter shell terminal]

    3, Input command as "vtmenu"

4, Select server (our test AIX server)

5, Select LPER (our test AIX server have a number 1 for LPAR)

    6, Login to server

7, Input command as "shutdown -rF" for server reboot.

8, Did not close the terminal window and wait as it is.

    9, Server starting boot process...

10, Then alternately press F5 and 5 botton soon and it repeat a few times. (The following steps will be carried out using the old procedure.)

I assume that the subsequent steps are the same as those outlined by YUKARI-san.

    Thank you for your support.

    Best regards

    Hello Osoegawa-san,

It is goood to hear restoring succesfully. Thank you for your sharing procedure.

There is also the following steps.

At your No.7, Input command as "shutdown -F", not reboot option

After the LPAR was stopped, select LPAR on HMC menu and start.

When select start your LPAR from HMC, you can select SMS (System management Service)  as boot mode in the detailed menu.

Then, your console will be automatically stopped at SMS menu.

    Please try the above also.

Either way, I am glad you were able to restore it.

    Konnichiwa  Katsumi-san,

(I remember a little high school Japanese)

Yes you will need to connect to the new server via the HMC.

On the HMC you will need to bring up the console for the LPAR.  When you start up the LPAR, start it in SMS mode, from the SMS you can then select the boot options - you'll need to select tape, from there it will boot from the tape and you continue from step 4.

    Konnichiwa  Katsumi-san,

It was during year 8, so yes junior part, not that we really had that distinction in Australia.  My school changed from teaching French to Japanese as it's foreign language when Australia's trade focus moved to Asia in the late 1980s/early 1990s (it is a government school).  I only did the one year.   Indonesian is the most commonly taught Asian language in the state of Australia that I'm from though.  Private/independent schools continued with teaching French/European languages.

Yes that looks like the correct procedure (I had to run it through a translator though).

    Konnichiwa Phill-san,

The Australian education system is different from Japan's. I was also surprised that Japanese was taught at one time in Australian education.

Our enginner did restore to rootvg successfully. The procedure executed by our engineers has been written in Yukari-san thread.

I found using HMC which I learned from Phill-san. It's helpful for my understanding.

PS. The Japanese link has been changed to the English link.

    Thank you for your support.

    Best regards,

    Konnichiwa  Katsumi-san,

Almost 30 years after I finished secondary/high school, my school is still teaching Japanese and doing student trips to Japan!
