The excel files are stored in an ftp location and the goal is for our process to grab the files from that location and load (replace/append) to an already existing excel data source definition to use with datamodule

Can this be done, has anyone done this

You can use REST API to update your file:
REST API for Cognos Analytics

You will use /files/import/{id} to update an existing file import.

You can simply use an ETL tool to utilize cognos REST API.
