In general, EDI refers to documents that are intended to be exchanged between enterprises (B2B) and whose content are governed by external bodies. The classic examples are X12 (ANSI) X12N (HIPAA) and UN/EDIFACT. The term is sometimes extended to include the broad range of B2B documents such as NACHA, ACORD AL3, HL7, SWIFTNet FIN, etc. SAP also uses the term EDI to refer to the file-based transfer of IDocs.
The term EDI usually excludes XML-centric B2B documents such as SEPA, ISO20022, and RosettaNet because the common feature among 'EDI' documents is that they are defined as complex record-based (usually delimited) structures.
Proprietary document usually refers to any document definition that is specific to an internal application system, i.e. not normally used to exchange information across corporate boundaries.
