Product Planning Input on OS prereqs

  • 1.  Product Planning Input on OS prereqs

    Posted 01/14/16 03:07 PM

    Hi,

For futures planning, we are looking at what we should be doing in Windows for OS/platform support, so would appreciate input.   The questions do not relate to any of the existing versions/releases.

    So,

    Windows:

1.)  Do you use Windows 7 today? If not, what are you using?

2.)  Do you have any plans to go to Windows 10??

3.)  For any Windows, do you use 32 bit Windows?

4.)  If you use Windows 64 bit, do you install the RBD 32 bit version or the 64 bit version?

5.)  If we were to drop 32 bit support in a future version/release, would that be an issue?

    Mac

1.) Do you have a requirement for us to support development on a Mac?

2.) If not now, is there a projected need?

    thanks.

    Mark

    Hi Mark,

    Windows:

1.)  Do you use Windows 7 today? If not, what are you using?

No, we already use Windows 10.

2.)  Do you have any plans to go to Windows 10??

           We already use Windows 10.

3.)  For any Windows, do you use 32 bit Windows?

           No.

4.)  If you use Windows 64 bit, do you install the RBD 32 bit version or the 64 bit version?

We always use the 64 bit version.

5.)  If we were to drop 32 bit support in a future version/release, would that be an issue?

           No.

    Mac

1.) Do you have a requirement for us to support development on a Mac?

          Maybe Cordova deployment on IOS?!

2.) If not now, is there a projected need?

          Maybe Cordova deployment on IOS?!

    Kind Regards!

    Hi Mark,

We use windows 10 64 bit for our development team.

We have installed the 32 bit of RBD because of the problems we had with the preview pane for Rich UI under 64bit RBD.

If the mozilla renderer for the Rich ui preview pane works under 64bit I see no problem migrating to 64 bit in the future.

I don't foresee any mac usage for us.

    Kind regards,

    Bram

    Bram,

A couple of followup questions (and I apologize up front if I have forgotten),

    - When you mentioned "problems we had with the preview pane for Rich UI under 64bit RBD", do you mean when are using RBD 9.5 and its ability to use the 64-bit XULRunner??  (manual setup).    Or the earlier versions?

    - If you do mean RBD 9.5, what problem are you having and have you opened a PMR?

    Thanks.

    Mark

I have not installed 9.5 yet. I am at 9.1, and I believe this version could not use the XULRunner if RBD was 64bit.

It has been a while since I did the installation, so I'm not entirely sure if it was 9.1 or one of the previous versions. I am sure that at some point I uninstalled a 64 bit version to replace it with the 32 bit version because of an error with the preview pane.

If the XULRunner should work under 9.5 64bit, then I see no issue in moving to 64 bit.

Thanks and you are right.... RBD 9.1 could not use 64-bit XulRunner, so you would have needed to install the 32-bit version.

Hi Mark, here is my input on this topic.

1.)  Do you use Windows 7 today? If not, what are you using?

Yes, the laptop I use for development is running Windows 7 (64-bit).

2.)  Do you have any plans to go to Windows 10??

No immediate plans. My laptop is only two years old and probably won't be upgrading for several years. Also, there has been no discussion from my manager on if or when we'll move to Windows 10.

3.)  For any Windows, do you use 32 bit Windows?

    No.

4.)  If you use Windows 64 bit, do you install the RBD 32 bit version or the 64 bit version?

No, I am running the 64 bit version of RBD.

5.)  If we were to drop 32 bit support in a future version/release, would that be an issue?

    No.

    Mac

1.) Do you have a requirement for us to support development on a Mac?

    No.

2.) If not now, is there a projected need?

No. We have standardize on Windows / Intel PCs.

I am currently running RBD 9.1 on my PC, but plan to install 9.5 when I have some free time,

No. It worries me just the others connector drives: CTG, DB2, etc.  Support EGL for zVSE and it  works 32 bits drives.
