PowerVS Console

  • 1.  PowerVS Console

    Hi,
I raised an RFE, now and IBM Idea hoping to get support fixing the PowerVS Console.  The only feedback I got before it was closed was to use ssh! Well of course, but when booting, debugging a boot etc, that is not possible.  I saw recently that @Alan Fulton tweeted about this, so might be worth addressing now.

If anyone would have any suggestions (or add their support to this request), it would be great.

    Thanks

Have you tried my suggestion (Ideas portal) to use ACS for Virtual Control Panel and 5250 console?
You need to add a 2nd IP address for the STS LAN Adapter and Connect ACS LAN Console to that port

    Hi,
Sorry I didn't make myself clear - I am talking about a replacement to the Java console that is available through PowerVS - which is required during booting and debugging boot issues - well before an IP address is available.
It is a fiddle to capture error messages and type in long strings into grub etc without the ability to cut and paste.
Once we have an OS, this is not a problem, as we have 5250, ssh, vnc etc.
    Thanks for your response.
    Cheers,

    Diego -

Can you forward me notes on how this is achieved?  I'm trying to develop some best practices notes around PowerVS setup, networking, etc.

Let's assume I have access to every redbook and can read, but am looking for ways to get right to the point..  That's why we ask questions...

Right to the point, there's a WA:

You can use a 2nd IP address and setup the Service Tools Server LAN Adapter:

    https://www.ibm.com/docs/en/i/7.4?topic=ssw_ibm_i_74/rzamh/rzamhsrvtoolsrvr4dstdst.htm

Now you can use this new IP Address to connect using ACS from your machine or a small Linux system.
If you want a browser based solution you can create small Linux VM/LPAR and install websockify + ACS + VNC

    https://www.linkedin.com/posts/diegokesselman_ibmi-ibmiseries-powervs-activity-6813240320084598784-u7-U?utm_source=linkedin_share&utm_medium=member_desktop_web

In my case I use a small Linux LPAR as a jumpserver and console on ACS, just in case my connection drops while running a process. I can see from there my 5250 console and virtual control panel.

    Hi,
The original IDEA was closed, but since there has been renewed interest, I created a new one ( IDEA-I-3474) and would be grateful if you could support it by voting for it and letting your colleagues know... Link: https://ibmcloud.ideas.ibm.com/ideas/IDEA-I-3474
I also clarified that I am only interested in using this console from the starting the PowerVS instance to when the network is active.  Similar to the reason why I prefer to use vtmenu/mkvterm from the HMC CLI, rather than using the Java GUI.

    Thanks,
    Keep safe,

I tried to upvote this, but I'm still waiting on a login code from IBM to hit my inbox.

I agree with the basic premise - PowerVS console access should be simple, easy, and function similarly to vtmenu with the HMC.  It should feel like a Power Systems environment ... just transported to someone else's data center. ;)

What we really need is an SSH url...  with authentication via the user's ssh pubkey in user@hmc:.ssh/authorized_keys

That would be browser agnostic, and would allow you to properly log the session (for documentation purposes).  Also, no password needed.

    Hi José,
All this is possible once we have an operational OS, trouble is if you need a console before this point..

I wasn't talking about ssh to the LPAR.

The current issue the the absolutely sub-par virtual terminal that the HMC web interface launches.
    - It starts with being a JNLP, which means that it's going to fail in new and exciting ways every single time something changes.

    - No copy-paste, no logging

    - Java webstart seems to be going the way of the dodo, which means that with each update it will become harder and harder to start the bloody thing.

If instead of the JNLP link you got an SSH link, you could associate it with your terminal emulator and get an SSH connection to the HMC which would plug you directly to the virtual serial console, and it would be faster and more robust than any JNLP solution.

On IBM i you can connect to the LAN console feature on a 2nd IP address as I've mention on a previous message.

Don't think this is possible when using AIX or Linux...

    Hi José,
Agree totally about the Java, if we could just get an ssh link to the HMC / Novalink LPAR , then I would be using the cli, mkvterm/vtmenu, which is much simpler and cleaner.
    Cheers,
