In attempting to ascertain the differences in power requirements / consumption between a p680 and a p520, if I am reading it right, there isn't much if any difference. Even though the p680 is massive in size compared to the p520. The official doc reads:

    p680: 200 - 245 volts AC
    p520: 100v to 127v or 200v to 240v AC

...so, how is the difference determined? Any help on identifying power requirements would be welcome.

    Many thanks

I am not an HVAC expert, but I think you need to be looking at the power load, not the voltage rating. That is what we do.

For the p520, you can run an estimated load using the Power Load calculator at http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/systems/scope/hw/topic/iphdl/powerloadcalc.htm.

For the p680, you will have to look at the maximum power source loading and according to the installation planning guide it is 2.129 KVa (Note a p680 is the same thing as an S85). This is maximum; for us, it typically works to plan on about 70% of that number as actual peak draw. This book is available at http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/pseries/v5r3/topic/com.ibm.pseries.doc/hardware_docs/sitehardwareplanning.htm

    Hope that helps...

I guess my VPN was throwing my URL's off... I just turned off my VPN... try these links:

    Power load calculator: http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/systems/scope/hw/index.jsp?topic=/iphdl/systemcalculators.htm

Install guide which includes max's for S85: http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/pseries/v5r3/index.jsp?topic=/com.ibm.pseries.doc/hardware_docs/sitehardwareplanning.htm

You may have to cut and paste the URL's into your browser...

Hope that gets you what you need...
