I would love to upgrade to WAS v9, but my enterprise applications require a specific version of WAS 8.5.5.
Is there a plan to resolve this at the middleware level, or is this on the application developers?

    Hello Matthew,
do you know what's the reason for you enterprise applications to require a specific version of WAS v8.5.5? Is this a technical limitation or is that this only version tested (and therefore supported) by the vendor?

I believe it's due to a technical limitation, although I'm not exactly sure what that limitation may be, most likely something related to Java version. The application in question is Rational Asset Manager, and last I heard required WAS 8.5.5.13. I had 8.5.5.14 installed and had to do a manual roll back. The WSadmin command -backupProfile worked, but -restoreProfile command did not work when I wanted to roll back, so I had to start over in regards to my WAS configurations.

    Hello Matthew,
as per https://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=ibm10734267 Rational Asset Manager requires WAS between 8.5.5.9 and  8.5.5.13. So you should contact the software vendor regarding the update strategy and to ensure that you stay supported.

    Hello Matthew,

the first idea that came to my mind was to utilize WAMT (WebSphere Application Migration Toolkit , https://developer.ibm.com/wasdev/downloads/#asset/tools-Migration_Toolkit_for_Application_Binaries) to find out the reason why the application might not run on ND 9. I used it a lot in discussions with development teams.

    Is WAS ND 9.0.x going to support both java 8 and <g class="gr_ gr_9 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling ins-del multiReplace" id="9" data-gr-id="9">java</g> <g class="gr_ gr_15 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Style multiReplace" id="15" data-gr-id="15">11 ?</g> Is it going to utilize the <g class="gr_ gr_10 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling ins-del multiReplace" id="10" data-gr-id="10">java</g> module system (which might be problematic for older apps)

    Hi Andre,

As its version implies, 9.0.x is based on V9 so it will continue to support Java 8.

For the "module system", if you are referring to JPMS that was first released in Java 9, WAS traditional V9 is not based on that so we do not expect 9.0.x to use it either.

    Hello Andre,

That is a very good question, and as it turns out a difficult question! But it's also a question that we get asked a lot. Let me start by saying we understand that for most traditional WAS customers, the important thing is that IBM maintains the longevity and stability of the platform in support of the long history of applications that continue to run there. This is our highest priority for traditional WAS. For applications that are being written or "modernized" to run in the cloud, as microservices, etc, it is best that these run with Liberty (either Open Liberty or WebSphere Liberty, depending on your support needs). That is why Liberty supports Java SE 11, Java EE 8, the MicroProfile standards, etc.

But getting back to traditional WAS... As you point out, the Java Modularity that was introduced after Java 8 has the potential to break a lot of applications. In fact, it also breaks traditional WAS itself. It is most likely that a version of traditional WAS that supports a Java version after Java 8 will not be able to support *both* Java 8 and Java 11. These are some of the difficulties, and they are not unique to WebSphere.

So in the interest of "longevity and stability", we will support traditional WAS with Java 8 for as long as we can keep it secure and continue to provide fixes. At this time, we do not know how that long will be. But please don't take our current lack of support for traditional WAS beyond Java 8 as a sign that we are not committed to that platform -- we know how important it is to you. And when we see that light coming from the end of the Java 8 tunnel, we will ensure our customers will be able to move forward to the then-current Java LTS platform with as little disruption as possible.

    Hi Dave,

That's encouraging to hear. I hope that there will be ample of time provided when the time comes to end support for Java 8. Prioritizing and coordinating a WAS migration for thousands of applications across multiple lines of business has always been a multi years effort.

    Thanks,

Does application navigator run only on ICP or can it run just on any k8s based cluster?

The Application Navigator tech preview (currently available via the Helm Chart) is limited to running on IBM Cloud Private, however Application Navigator itself is not technically limited to ICP. We have successfully run it on multiple k8s clusters, including MiniKube, ICP and IKS. The plan is to have Application Navigator be deployable on a variety of Kubernetes environments. Like many software projects, Application Navigator will be iteratively developed and improved. While I can not say what the initial supported Kubernetes platforms will be we are working with multiple platforms in-mind. If you have a specific target environment in mind, we'd be happy to hear it.

How about Red Hat Openshift? Since they're going to be part of IBM family soon, I hope that there's a better synergy coming up soon between offerings available for ICP and OCP ;)
