Through the use of this narrative and the complimentary case study, a story will be described of how we were able to move away from manually creating, manipulating, and maintaining an abundance of reports for our direct end users and executive leadership team on a monthly or ad hoc basis.
When doing anything manual, whether that be tweaking an Excel file or entering data into a PowerPoint, human error is a potential risk and subsequently this could lead to misleading information. This was the case here at Leidos, creating multiple custom financial reports monthly for each IT organization and creating custom reports as requested. Not only does this open the window for human error, but it also requires valuable time from individuals to create these reports. There will always be a need for reporting and with Apptio's capabilities to create custom reports, we are able to create and easily maintain these reports.
There are two business needs that will be focused on today: presenting monthly financials and analyzing actuals from year to year. Having reports that provide this information not only provides insight into what has previously been accomplished and current activities but can assist in making future decisions. For example, if labor costs increase year over year and it is determined that an increase to the budget is necessary, the information to justify the additional ask in funds is easily and readily attainable.
With the use of Apptio and Cost Transparency, Leidos has been able to move away from manually creating six PowerPoint decks on a monthly cadence and has also been able to create custom reports for unique use cases. Using custom reporting, we are now able to save valuable time in both the short and long run. Having custom reports in Apptio will eliminate the need for individuals to pull information from multiple Excel sources and manually enter it into decks as the information already exists in Apptio. Additionally, by making use of custom reports in Apptio, a report can be utilized now and, in the future.
Automation is a big factor for us in why custom reports are so useful. Once a report is configured and formatted to suit our business needs, that report can be utilized moving forward with minimal required maintenance. Not only are the end users excited for all the capabilities custom reporting can provide, but the TBM Office is thrilled to know they will be able to meet the needs of said end users.
