Past Activities are not listed in My Schedules and Subscriptions

  • 1.  Past Activities are not listed in My Schedules and Subscriptions

    Posted Thu October 22, 2020 01:58 PM
    Hi,

Is anyone is facing this issue too?

After migrating from 11.1.1 to 11.1.7 FP1, users past activities are not listed in My Schedules and Subscriptions.

But they are showed in Administration Console.

This also occurs in 11.1.7 IF002.

I already opened a case in IBM Support.

Our is environment is Suse 12 for Z.

    Regards

    Hi Jeam,

I'm not sure if your issue is related to ours, but for us starting with testing 11.1.6 and now all the way up to 11.1.7 FP1, Cognos stops running schedules at random times and won't start running schedules again until I go into Administration and look at Current & Past Activities.  It's not just an individual's Past Activities but for ALL users - nor do I see anything in Administration Past Activities.  But when I connect in and look, the act of my looking starts it running schedules again and they may run for a few hours or a day, but then they will stop running until I go in again.  It's like some process is going to sleep.

We have no problems with schedules in our current 11.1.5 Production environment but as I mentioned see this problem starting with 11.1.6.  We want to eventually move off of 11.1.5 so I opened a support ticket with IBM on 11.1.7 FP1.

IBM is working with me having me try all sorts of things but so far it feels like we're just shooting in the dark.

Hopefully yours will be an easier fix!

I don't see any schedule issue at our end in 11.1.6.

I can see it's available in drop down (11.1.6):

@Jeam Coelho We have 11.1.7 FP1 installed and can successfully see past activities in My schedules and subscriptions.

@Wayne Westlake We have are evaluating 11.1.7 FP1. The problem you describe would be a nightmare if it made it to Production. Please post a follow up of your issue. Very curious if anyone else has come across this.

    Thanks,
    Wendi

@Wendi Lewis I'm still working with support.  Yeah obviously there's no way we can go to production with this issue either.  We have nearly 1,000 enabled schedules.

The engineer mentioned that he's seeing these errors in our logs:

CM-REQ-4159 Content Manager returned an error in the response header. The error 'cmAuthenticateFailed CM-CAM-4005 Unable to authenticate. Check your security directory server connection and confirm the credentials entered at login' can be found in the response SOAP header.

    and

CNC-SDS-0222 An error occurred while trying to send a message in message manager.

    He said:

The failed to authenticate error usually pops up when users with expired credentials attempt to run schedules. This is interesting because there is a known defect with an open APAR where schedules that fail with this error do not appear in the Past Activities and appear is if they were never attempted.

The known defect he mentions we've already seen - if a user's credentials expire then their schedules stop running and there are no errors or messages.  This defect has been open since April with not ETA of when it will be fixed!

We do not see the failed to authenticate error at all in our 11.1.5 Production environment nor when we run 11.1.5 on our dev server but we obviously see it running 11.1.7.1 on the Dev server.  So it's not the server nor our nextwork, etc.

The 0222 error we've seen ever since we've been on 11 and in the dozens of previous support tickets we've had with other issues we've always been told that if it doesn't appear to be causing any problems then to ignore it.  But the engineer on this case seems to think it could be partially at fault.

He did finally have me enable the SDS Tracing level in the logging and then send everything to him when it happened again.  Did that all last week and he's digging through it now.

One thing I think could be an issue is we have a fair amount of Events.  We use them to determine if our ETL process is at a certain point so reports can run on the newly updated data and we also use them with Invoicing to determine if there's an actual sale so we don't send out blank invoices.  When we upgraded to 11.0.13 FP1 from 11.0.12 we were plagued with errors with our Events and after numerous patches we were finally told that most of the issues with Events were fixed in 11.1.2 & 11.1.3 and they most likely would NOT be fixed in the 11.0.13 branch.  We were also told that not very many customers were using events and at that time IBM was deliberating deprecating them in a future release.  That's why we were forced to move to 11.1.5 and for the most part the issues with Events were fixed though 11.0.12 had corrupted many of them and we were forced to rewrite them from scratch.

My concern based on the last responses from the engineer is things seem to stop running after an Event has just run.  So they may have broken Events again starting with 11.1.6 and not enough customers are using them, or have as many as we do to have raised this issue.

    Hi,

Some information that may be useful for all.

We have a multi install environment, with 1 Content Manager, 1 Gateway and 6 Application .

Today, we have more then 12k schedules per day.

And we notice that, as soon as schedule runs, it appears at My Schedules. But after several other schedules runs, it desappears.

We think that is a limitation of number of rows returned on My Schedules and Activities pane or something in the Cognos code that is limiting results, despite of the user that is opening that view.

    Good morning,

First - are you able to see these past activities on the Administration console?  If not then something fairly complex is going wrong, and I'd suggest you open a case with IBM.

But if they are showing in the Admin Console, then my experience with "My Schedules and Subscriptions" is that successfully viewing past activities there is dependent on having good search indexes in your environment.

My advice is to re-create your search indexes per this article:  https://www.ibm.com/support/pages/how-reset-search-indexes-cognos-analytics-1112-and

I have had a lot of success at multiple clients in correcting this issue simply by recreating those indexes.  There are many things in Cognos 11 that use these indexes, not just the Search function.

    Good luck!

    Hi, Richard.

    Thanks for your advice!

We stopped services, run NC_DROP and NC_CREATE and deleted search folder.

The past activities starts to be shown on My Schedules.

    It solves my problem.

    Thank you very much!

In regards to the posted support link, should this action be taken on only the Content Manager or the Content Manager and all Dispatchers?  I see that these folders exist on all application servers.

    Thanks,

    Good morning Leslie,

The documentation is not super clear here.  It's my observation that the Active Content Manager controls the indexes.  So at a minimum you should delete the search indexes following the instructions https://www.ibm.com/support/pages/how-reset-search-indexes-cognos-analytics-1112-and on all of your servers on which you've installed the Content Manager component.

While I am not aware of any downside risk of deleting the search index folder on non-CM servers, I am not aware of any benefit either.

    Best,

    Rich
