    I am new to AIX. One of the p615 machine stops at E170 error code (which I tracked down in the IBM docs to PCI bus/update firmware). OS is AIX 5.1L. The system has only one hdisk and one VG. The system does not boot.
    I do have a tape drive with a bootable tape in it. but the system does not reach the SMS menu for me to try and boot with it. ditto for CD I suppose.

    any pointers appreciated..

    if you cant boot a cd or tape, then you may want to raise a h/w call with IBM .. has this system ever worked and you have not made any changes ? if so, then its probably a h/w fault .. and if it has never worked, then send it back :)

    You probably have a bad PCI card in one of the slots, or the system board is bad.
    Remove all of the PCI adapter cards and try to boot the system, if it fails with no cards, remove all devices plugged in to the on-board scsi, if you have any, leave only the CD or a single hard disk.
    If you still get E170 remove all scsi devices and cables and look for a different error.
    If it still posts E170 after trying the above I think you need a new system board.

    No updates that I know of. This error was a result of attempts to fix another error. I don't have a history.. :(

    I've swapped out the m/c for the time being but need to fix the other one soon. Don't have ibm support to rely on either.

    I too had this problem after updating AIX to 5.2ML9. The CE came and replaced the service processor. He seemed to think that the update had corrupted the firmware, but I think it more likely that what was corrupted was the NVRAM. There may be a way to reset the NVRAM to defaults without replacing the service processor.

    Turns out that I was supposed to upgrade the firmware before upgrading the box to TL9. IBM says we need to clear out the nvram and restore to an earlier version, then upgrade firmware, then go to TL9.

    Now the system is showing 0517 error - which points to a full/corrupt FS. I am going to try to reload from a backup tape and start from scratch if possible. Have to set this aside yet again for now. hope to get back to this by Fri.
