Does anybody know the name of an old IBM Informix reference manual from the 80s/90s that had little text-based diagrams that illustrated SQL joins? It was a wonderful visual explainer as to exactly how outer and inner joins worked, and I have never seen joins explained so well since then.

    You may be referring to:

    Informix Guide to SQL: Tutorial

Indeed, this is *still* a great manual that I point every member of our team, especially new hires, to.  Not only for Informix but to understand relational databases/SQL in general also.

If it was am official manual, it was probably the Informix Guide to SQL Syntax or Tutorial.  I can't lay my hands on one right now.

If not, I just looked at my copy of Ron Flannery's Informix Handbook.  It has a good section on JOINs, with illustrations.

Are you thinking of the Informix Dunamic Server Performance Guide? It has diagrams like this:

FYI, what was the Performance Guide is still available, however, as of the v14.10 manuals and the online manuals, that content is part of the "Administering Informix" manual.

    Dear Sir,

I think I may have found the manual

"IBM Informix Guide to SQL: Tutorial and Reference" (1989)

This manual is known for its clear explanations and visual diagrams, including text-based diagrams illustrating SQL joins.

    Another possibility is

    "IBM Informix SQL Reference" (1991)

This manual also contains diagrams and explanations of SQL joins.
