Offloadin/storing Data Protect backups to Storage Protect to tape?

    Hi,
Storing backup data from Data Protect to Storage Protect is supported. What are your experiences with also keeping a copy on tape?

    Best regards,
    Daniel Larsson

    Hi Daniel,

You can chain Storage Protect to Data Protect for archival purposes.
To offload backup pieces from Data Protect to store them for long term in Storage Protect, and release space in the cluster for current activities.

    In reply to your question:
My experience is that is pretty much easy to configure. You can make it work in a few hours.
You have to size direct access storage pools in Storage Protect to act as a landing zone for uploads, and also for downloads. Size will depend on your workloads.
Once configured, you relay on Data Protect Archive Policies, that will perform the Archival to Storage Protect.
And have in mind that retrieval from there will take time.

    Go for it.

    Regards

    Nicolás.

    Hi

Perhaps one can use the Spictera Unified Storage to do this for you too?

    As the interface is generic?

Bucket, VTL, file... with backend to IBM Storage Protect of course.

    Dear Daniel,

as per my knowledge, you have to integrate the defender with spectrum protect ,

then you can create a pool on spectrum protect and configure the pool policy to take the backups come from IBM defender to offsite tape

    Hello Daniel,

it works, there is two how you can do it (with DP 7.2):

    - using S3 Glacier and a cold data pool: This is good for long term archive data and the data goes (over the cache pool) directly to tape. Only full copies are supported. Keep in mind that if you loose the DP cluster you can not retrieve this data anymore
    - using normal S3 and a containerpool: This is good for an airgap copy ( Cloud Archive V2) incremental forever is supported, however the data will remain in the container pool and only a copy of the containerpool can be made to tape.

Hopefully in DP 7.3 some improvements are made and more scenarios are possible.

    hello team,

i fount the procedure bellow , but to my understanding this creates full copies of backups to tape.

    https://www.ibm.com/docs/en/storage-defender/base?topic=sddp-archiving-storage-defender-data-protect-data-storage-protect-tape

    Tips and limitations:

    • Use the archive to tape feature only for monthly archives to tape. Frequent, full archives to tape are not recommended since incremental functionality is not available.

it is the same procedure that i have used to keep long term SPP VM backups to tape
what i would like to ask if there is way to migrate old data from Storage Defender data protect to Storage protect using tiering by age

for example all backups stored on Storage Defender Data Protect older than 2 month should be migrated to Storage Protect Pools (either tape or disk)
i haven't found anything about it

    thanks

    Hi Emmanouil,
as Daniel mentioned above, the Data Protect cloud archive v2 supports incremental archive to S3 standard tier external targets. SP is a supported external target for this. Find the reference documentation here: https://www.ibm.com/support/pages/node/7232490. If a disk pool works for you in this context, this can be an option.
When you register SP as an external target for standard tier use the purpose "Archival" and storage type "S3Compatible", storage class "Regular". It is recommended to set the garbage collection to "Storage Optimized" for on-prem targets. Archival format will default to "Incremental Forever".
Then add the archive option to your Data Protect policy. You can define frequency and retention there for the archive operation in a way that fits your requirements.

    Good day Dominic

thank you for your prompt reply.
it s not clear to me if the solution proposed works as tiering of data to a lower cheaper tier

for example do i have the option to migrate all daily backups stored on Storage Defender Data Protect older than 2 month and send them to Storage Protect Pools (either tape or disk) ?

and if yes, will this reduce the overall license ?
for example instead of having 3 months of backups stored on the DP Cluster to have one month of backups stored on the DP cluster and 2 months older daily backups on another tier like SP tape, S3 storage etc ?

    thanks again

I would assume that one can setup tiering for this as one can do for other types of data?

    Hi Emmanouil,
the Data Protect cloud archive v2 generates an additional copy of your backup data on the directory container storage pool in the SP server. In Data Protect you set dedicated frequency and retention for this independend of the daily backup you configured. The incremental function will send all the missing updates to the SP server when the policy runs.
Inside the SP server you cannot migrate this data to tape. The option you have to get an additional copy of this directory container pool on tape is the protect stgpool feature of the SP server that can be used to copy the deduplicated data to tape.
I cannot comment on the license questions. Please contact your IBM rep for this.
