  • 1.  ODBC driver

A coworker of mine on our Data & Analytics team is trying to establish an ODBC connection from a Windows Server 2022 server to our IBM Power 10 with IBM iOS. He wants to be able to read some DB2 data. He is using the IBM Client Access ODBC drive and is under the impression that drive is not supported on a Windows Server 2022. Is there another ODBC driver that he should be using to connect to the IBM Power server for DB2?

Mapepire is a new driver that I've heard a lot about but haven't used yet. There will be a session about it at TechXchange in Orlando next month. We are interested in switching over to this.

    Hi Lori,

Thank you for your reply. It's funny you mentioned Mapepire. Earlier this year I attended the Northeast User Groups Conferences (NEUGC), and one of the sessions I attended was about Mapepire. The speaker was Sanjula Ganepola from IBM. I wonder if the session you are referring to is the same. I'll have to talk to my coworker to see what development language they are using. Looking at the slides from that presentation I don't think it currently works with C# and PHP, but I believe they said that is something they're working on adding. I'll see if this is something they can maybe use.

    Thank you!

    Hi Michael,

do you know if you are using the last version of ODBC Driver ? The name "IBM Client Access " reminds me of the old version of the driver and I encourage you to download and test the last version for Windows Server 2022.
I should point out that I have not specifically tested on Windows Server 2022 but I believe the latest driver should work.

Some information to download and use the last version of the ODBC Driver : https://www.ibm.com/support/pages/odbc-driver-ibm-i-access-client-solutions

They are using the latest version of the ODBC for ACS (Access Client Solutions).  It looks like it was last updated 2 years ago. We might need to look into Mapepire like Lori suggested.

My Windows ODBC Driver is from May 2024, in version 13.64.28.00. You can see your version in the Windows panel ODBC Data Source Administrator.

But the mapepire is a good solution too !
Please keep us updated on your implementation with C# or PHP ; I'm really interested in that.
I've successfully implemented Mapepire for Node and Python applications. It's really promising, very lightweight, and has minimal dependencies !

In addition of Lori message, here is our article with a presentation on the subject and some examples : https://cfd-innovation.fr/blog/mapepire-le-nouveau-client-pour-se-connecter-a-libm-i/

I believe I have the latest version. When I look at the Readme document it says the version is this:

    ---------------------------------
    Version: 1.1.0.28
    Build Date = May 2024
    ---------------------------------

I've asked my coworkers about what version they are using, and it looks like it's the current version. I was told by one of my coworkers that the current version cannot be installed on a Windows 2022 server because it's not compatible. They have a workaround for the meantime, but I guess we'll need to figure something out. It may be using mapepire, but that will take time to setup and configure on the Windows server and our IBM i.

    Thank you for your help!

    -Mike
