As many of you know, October is Cyber Security Awareness month.   This is typically the month when companies hold security awareness events to remind employees about remaining vigilant when it comes to spotting a phishing attempt, keeping patching up to date, and creating strong passwords, among other things.

Here at IBM, we will be doing our annual (and mandatory) Cyber Security Awareness training for every employee.  Over the years, I've seen companies hold awareness events such as games to enforce good security practices, passing out brochures to employees as they enter the building, and even scheduling a mobile shredder to come to the company parking lot to allow employees to bring in personal documents to shred.

I 'm curious, what are others doing in October to recognize Cyber Security Awareness month?  What unique events have you seen in the past?  Let's share some good ideas.

At IBM Austin yesterday, I was asked to provide an example of how working in IBM Security has affected the security habits of my family and friends. Just about everyone works at home at least a little bit every week so our work and play digital lives co-mingle on a home network with dozens of connected devices. Our vigilance for phishing has been raised for a few years now. In addition to being suspicious as the default for attachments, I try to get everyone to unsubscribe as much as possible to reduce the potential number of threats via email. I'm not too proud to say that I fell for a test phishing attempt at work--it was a really good replica of an internal site--and that has made me scrutinize external emails more closely.
