The questions are about 3 different servers. I'm going to post results of various commands from the three servers I have a question about, and someone can tell me how many PHYSICAL CPU's/cores I have.....

I would say that server 3, which is also using dedicated processors, is using 2 cores.

Since each server is running SMT, then the each processor on the partition appears as 2 logical processors. So server 1 shows 8 logical processors, server 2 shows 4 logical processors, and server 3 shows 4 logical processors.

Could the confusion come from the definition of processors vs cores vs chips? In IBM terms a processor is a core but some vendors put multiple cores on a single chip and call that chip a processor.

I'll have to watch Nigel's video and see where the confusion might come from.

But I was told that the 1st server is an 8 physical core box, the 2nd was a 4 core and the 3rd was 2 core; however, watching Nigel's video contradicted that, so I had to ask in this forum. Basically, I was really confused by what was told to me and the video....

I guess I could log a PMR with IBM, but I really don't want to waste IBM's suuport with some silly like this.
    Anymore...
    Thanks BTW!!

Then look at 48 and 49, 53 is good also, but 48 and 49 are the ones I'm talking about.

recently I was involved in renewing the SWMA contract for 1 particular box which apparently had 4 Chips/8 CPUs but the license for AIX came in as for 4, let me get in touch with the person who sent us the quote and I'll get back to you as soon as he replies.

    To me is pretty clear,
on machine 1, you have 2 Chips / 4 physical CPUs or cores, which AIX's SMT make them look like 8.
on machine 2, your LPAR is entitled to two physical processors or cores (there is no saying on which ones but I'd assume the power hypervisor would try to make them stay as close as possible), AIX's SMT makes them look like 4.

    best regards,
    esv.

recently I was involved with a swma refresh for a machine with 8 CPUs, I guess it has 4 dual core chips, the license, and fee, was for 4 processors.

When I checked with a different box that has 2 physical CPUs, the quote said it required a 1 processor license.

I am not sure how that affects Oracle and other product licenses.

    best regards,

Everyone in this thread is agreeing with what I see..

I'm thinking about logging a ticket with IBM, it's silly, but it might be the only way to convince others.....
