  • 1.  normalization of variable values

Sometimes, if one has two variables using different scale or number values, if one wants to combine them into a single unified variable, one can "normalize" each of the variables by recalibrating them on a common scale (say, their value on a scale of 100).  then the two variables assume a common metric.  how can one accomplish this normalization of variables on SPSS?

See the DESCRIPTIVES procedure, particularly its /SAVE subcommand. That will create z-scores. You can then use COMPUTE commands to make new variables with any mean and SD you like.
