    Hi,

I'm having a problem where nimsh is failing on our VIOS servers. I don't know what causes nimsh to get into a mess, but once it dies, then it seems to really die.

Deleting the niminfo file and trying to recreate it just completely fails. The client seems to add itself on the NIM server, but won't create a local niminfo file, and the nimsh service won't start. You get three entries in the errpt file, but no real clues as to what is going on.

I would like to keep the VIOS attached to nim as a way of taking mksysb backups.

The NIM is AIX 56.1 TL8, SP2, and the VIOS are 2.2.2.2 and 2.2.2.1

Folloing advice on the AIXpert blog to change VIOS hostnames to fully qualified in preparation for Shared Storage Pools, it seems that in a VIOS environment, nimsh doesn't like FQDN... change back to shortname and nimsh will work again...

Oddly, a non VIOS system has survived the hostname change from short to FQDN with no ill effects to nimsh...
