  • 1.  New procedure for I/O Firmware update from HMC poorly explained

    Posted Mon December 08, 2025 02:49 AM

In the previous version of this procedure we were presented with this interface, where it (at least to me) was logical and understandable that I select the device I wanted or needed to update.

With the new procedure I am presented with this instead

I have been browsing thru the View or update the I/O firmware from the HMC
To find any documentation on the procedure to ensure that I am supposed to "remove" the adapters that I don't want to or need to update, but so far I haven't found anything.
Can anyone confirm that I have interpreted the GUI correct?

    Ibm remove preview
View or update the I/O firmware from the HMC
The HMC can be used to query the current I/O firmware levels for a system and to update those firmware levels from a repository. The HMC does not have direct access to login to the partitions to perform I/O updates. It relies on the RMC infrastructure which is also used to DLPAR, service focal point, etc to provide this feature.

    @Henrik Mainz

That's exactly it. You only select the devices you want to update.

NOTE: If you have a FC Adapter with 4 ports (fcs0, fcs1, fcs2 and fcs3), selecting only one will update all four because the firmware updates the entire board.

Below is the information you can obtain directly from the HMC Update screen.

    Update I/O firmware

Use this wizard to change I/O code for the I/O devices of the managed system from the Hardware Management Console (HMC). Before you start the wizard, ensure that you meet all the prerequisite requirements.

    Wizard: Overview

This wizard assists you in changing the I/O code for the managed system. A message is displayed depending on the action you want to perform.

    Accept License

In order to proceed with the I/O update, you must accept the software license agreement. Select I accept the terms of this license agreement to accept the terms and conditions of the license agreement and continue with the Change I/O Code wizard.

    I/O Firmware Repository

This repository is where the I/O code images are located. The I/O code images are downloaded to the disk from the specified source and then used for the update to change I/O code for the I/O devices of the managed system.

The types of I/O code repositories are as follows:
    • IBM Website: This option is selected by default. I/O codes are downloaded from the IBM Website.
    • Removable Media:
      • CD/DVD: Select the CD or DVD that contains the I/O codes to download.
      • USB: Select the USB flash drive that contains the I/O codes to download.
    • FTP/SFTP site: Select the remote FTP/SFTP site that contains the I/O codes to download.

Specify the following details to download the I/O codes from the FTP/SFTP site:

      • FTP/SFTP Site: Enter the hostname or IP Address of the remote host site.
      • FTP/SFTP User ID: Enter the User ID of the remote host site.
      • FTP/SFTP Password: Enter the login password of the remote host site.
      • FTP/SFTP Directory: Enter the directory path on the remote system for the location of the firmware images.
      • SFTP Keyfile: Enter the keyfile.
    • Mount Point: A specific directory path on the local hard drive where I/O codes are available.

    Available Levels for Operation

Select the I/O devices you want to update. The list of devices displays the available levels for update.

    Summary

This section displays a table of all the I/O devices along with the target I/O code levels selected for the I/O code change operation.

    Change I/O Code Progress

This section provides ongoing status messages for the actions that are currently being performed.
