Announcing the New Alpha Program for WebSphere Application Server and Developer Tools!

In the spirit of the dynamic and quick to start Liberty profile, and in less than four months following the release of WebSphere Application Server v8.5, the WebSphere team is excited to announce the Alpha program for the next release of WebSphere Application Server and Developer Tools.

In fact, the WebSphere team has not just one, but three exciting new early release announcements:
    1. IBM WebSphere Application Server V8.5.Next - Liberty Profile Alpha
    2. WebSphere Application Server Developer Tools for Eclipse (WDT) V.Next Alpha
    3. Liberty Profile Admin UI Tech Preview

First, is an early release of enhancements to the WebSphere Application Server Liberty profile. The Liberty profile, which was first introduced in WebSphere Application Server v8.5, is a highly composable and dynamic application server runtime environment. Its fast restart time, small size, and ease of use makes the Liberty profile a great option for developers building applications that do not require the full Java Enterprise Edition (Java EE) environment. This Alpha is providing key Liberty profile enhancements to extend the capabilities in the areas of programming model support, security, and third party extensibility.

Key enhancements in the Alpha include:
    - Previews of EJB Lite and Contexts and Dependency Injections (CDI), to complete support for the Java EE Web Profile
    - Web services support through the JAX-WS Java EE API
    - Support for custom user registries
    - Ability for third parties to add Liberty features through a new System Programming Interface

Second, is an early view into the next release of the WebSphere Application Server Developer Tools (WDT) for Eclipse. WDT is a lightweight set of tools for developing, assembling and deploying applications to WebSphere Application Server. The WDT V.Next Alpha provides enhancements in support of Liberty features such as programming models, application management, and configuration.

Key enhancements in the Alpha include:
    - Support for EJB Lite and CDI application development
    - Application deployment and test with the WebSphere Application Server V8.5.Next Alpha
    - Enhanced web application development support for jQuery
    - Support for creating third party Liberty features
    - Enhanced capabilities that support integration with Maven

Third, is a Liberty Profile Admin UI Technology Preview of a new lightweight and customizable user interface (UI) for administering Liberty profile servers and applications.

The early programs are an opportunity for users to evaluate and provide feedback to influence future release capabilities early in the release cycle. The WebSphere team welcomes your input and looks forward to collaborating with you.
