Need help urgently, thanks for the help.

Because I failed to update the BMC firmware of IBM AC922 GTW, the server cannot start and the BMC cannot be accessed. How can I recover? According to some help, it can be recovered through USB mode, but I can't determine where the short jumper is. I need help. I am about to be fired by my boss.

The only situation I can think of where a failure of updating the BMC firmware would affect the inability to start would be if you upgraded the HMC past a level compatible with the old level of firmware.  However I'm not seeing that model in the HMC/Firmware level matrix at IBM - FLRT Supported code combinations for IBM Power Systems so I'm questioning if an HMC is even involved.

What errors are you seeing on the system?

Can you tell me the shorting pin for firmware recovery on the BMC CARD motherboard? Where is it? I saw a USB port on the BMC CARD motherboard, which should be used for firmware recovery, but it needs to be shorted to enter recovery mode.

    Hi.

If you're lucky, the P area may still be at the level prior to the update.
That's why there are a Permanent and Temporary areas.
Try booting by switching using function 2 to >P in the panel or in the ASMI, if it's still accessible. Use function 30 to check the ASMI's IP address. It's possible it's changed, which is why it can't be accessed.
    Good luck!

I think it's not because of the IP change problem, because the three indicators above the power switch on the front panel are not on. Is there any way to restore the firmware? There is a mention of USB recovery mode, but it needs to be shorted. I don't know which pin is shorted for the recovery mode.

The AC922 is not HMC-managed nor does it have an ASMI: it has an OpenBMC processor.
I suggest opening a hardware support ticket with IBM to get to the right support folks (and maybe Product Engineering) as needed to recover your system.

    Posting for a colleague:

Not sure what firmware update has to do with booting the server to start and connecting to the BMC IP, if there was a BMC IP added to the card then it should be accessible. https://bmc_ip to get to the openbmc GUI and from there you can update the firmware.

If the system does not have a BMC IP for any reason then you need to connect a monitor and keyboard and try to boot and get to the petitboot shell to add the IP info.

But if you are saying that the system does not power on, that is a different story. Look at the power button and see if the button is flashing, if so then there is communication to the BMC if not flashing then the BMC is not in a good state and not communicating. You can try to pull AC and force a BMC reboot, to see if you get a flashing LED.

USB firmware update is not for AC922 systems. Any internal USB connections are for internal lab develoopment use. You will need to get the IP address of the BMC in order to update firmware. either by using the GUI or by using the openbmc tool, or via xCat if you have the system connected. https://www.ibm.com/docs/en/power9/8335-GTH?topic=support-getting-fixes

There some jumpers that will prevent a system to boot if the firmware on the system is mismatch from what is on the processors, but there you will get an istep failure when trying to boot. Do you see this?

Let start from the beginning, internal USB ports are not for customers to use, they were only there for lab testing. If your system is not booting you will need to see if you have power to the power button. Is the power button flashing green, and if so what happens when you push the power button?  The light indicator of the power button will tell us if BMC is alive and connecting or not.  Nothing to do with firmware at that point. If you have a monitor connected and you push the power button do you see any isteps flashing on the screen??
