  • 1.  MQ Client version used by Datapower

    Posted Thu March 05, 2020 09:25 AM
    8.0.0.1 was released Sept 12, 2014.
MQ 8 goes End of Support Apr 30, 2020.
    MQ 9.0 was released June 2, 2016, MQ 9.1 on July 23, 2018

Asked from the perspective of an MQ Administrator, why does the current version of DataPower still use MQ Client version 8.0.0.1? One would think IBM would use relatively current versions of its own software. I don't expect every Firmware version to ship with the latest MQ Client, but it seems DataPower is stuck on a 6 year old version of MQ Client that goes out of support in a few weeks.

    2018.4.1.0 was released 15 November 2018.
We do not change library versions in fixpacks.
You can assume that a newer MQ client version will be in place for next major release.

    Hi Peter,
I acknowledge you are not the only one with this concern and I personally also feel it is a bit confusing.
It seems DataPower is not using features of the "latest" MQ client library versions and so compatibility still seems to be good enough (well, to the level of quality it has been for long?). From my experience most often the traditional MQ usecases keep being compatible over many releases so stay working reasonably fine.
Also note that DataPower so far uses a customized version of MQ client library so the client version 8.0.0.0 given by "show library" is not a perfectly correct indicator as selected fixes of later fixpacks are included.
I suspect that we might have seen a MQ client library upgrade last year but for certain reasons that year didn't see a new major release causing this extended "oldschool" state.
By the way, looking at the recently updated compatibility matrix for DP 2018.4.1 and MQ, it looks like we dropped out MQ 8.0 already and state MQ 9.0/9.1 for the backend server integration compatibility part. Almost funny...
My strong hope / assumption is that we will see an MQ client library upgrade with a next major release, I hope this year.

Hi you can refer to the software compatibility reports for the official answer; but unofficially while it is true that the standalone MQ 8.x client is going EoS the MQ client embedded in DataPower is not going out of support. Also MQ is backwards compatible so the MQ client in DataPower is interoperable with MQ version 9.0.x & 9.1.x
