  • 1.  Movement of TSM server from old to new window OS

    Posted Thu March 30, 2017 07:29 AM

    Hi Team,

We are using TSM server 5.5 version in application. Currently our existing window server is not responding properly.

So we have plan to create new window server and migration the data from old to New.

The TSM server is connecting to EMC Centera (.PEA) file.

So can you please provide me process for moving OLD to New TSM server and also tell me how the new TSM server will interact with  same Centra.

    Thanks in Advance!!!

    Regards,

    RSY

    Hi,

Install a new 7.1 or 8.1 Spectrum Protect Server and do server to server communications to export the data to the new server. Move clients to the new server after the export/import.

    Lookup export node: Export NODE

You can do upgrade from 5.5 to 7.1 but this is a more complicated process. Starting clean with 7.1 or 8.1 is recommended. I have done export from 5.5 to 7.1 servers, though it is not a supported, it works great. Do perform a test restore afterwards to verify things work as expected!

    Kind regards, Groetje,

    Marcel

7.1 yes, but not 8.1.  The upgrade wizard for legacy versions is no longer included in newer releases.  I believe 7.1.1 is the latest with the wizard:  https://www.ibm.com/support/knowledgecenter/SSGSG7_7.1.1/com.ibm.itsm.srv.upgrd.doc/t_srv_upgrd.html

A good plan nevertheless to both upgrade and migrate to a new machine.

why don't you just upgrade TSM on the existing server?

A new Server is recommended because of changed system requirements between 5.5 and 7.1. The internal database was replaced by a DB2 database. If you want to do dedup, fast disks (15k rpm or SSD type) are highly recommended for your TSM database and active log.

You need a 64 bit system with at least 12 GB memory and lot's more disk space than typically was needed with version 5.5. See:

    Spectrum Protect hardware requirements.

    Happy reading!

    Kind regards, Groetje,
