  • 1.  Monitoring Tool - Dynatrace for Cognos

    Hi All,

    We have our Cognos report links integrated within our web application. We use Dynatrace to monitor all other product applications, while we are starting to use Dynatrace for our Cognos servers too.

    We would like to know the list of services which can be added in dynatrace.
    We do see p2pd service, bi service, dataset service and queryservice, but not sure which service is the right one to capture the queries generated by Cognos for report execution.
    Also, would like to know if there are any performance implications for using dynatrace monitoring on our Cognos servers.
    Can you please share your experiences on using Dynatrace for your Cognos applications?

    Hi Dhanush,

    With my customer we have try Dynatrace with Cognos 11.0.13
    If Dynatrace is configured in "simple mode", for only checking server status (memory, cpu, disk, ...) its works fine.
    But if you configure Dynatrace in a "deep mode", for checking services inside Cognos JVM, we     encounter many problems in Cognos portal, mostly in the Administration Console.
    So be careful with that tool ;-)

    Thanks for your response.
    ​We are trying out in "deep mode" in out test servers, before configuring in PROD servers. Can you please help with more insights on problems encountered in Administration Console?
    We enable self service reporting for our users, more often that not, we end up in long running reports utilizing complete resource. We are planning to monitor closely on Query service. We were trying to add biservice, queryservice but not able to capture the queries/running threads? Can you please help with exact pointers for monitoring Query service?

    Hi Dhanush,

    We ran into issues with Dynatrace in our environment. I started noticing new/additional errors in the Cognos log files and opened a ticket with IBM. I was advised that Dynatrace isn't part of the Cognos supported software environments, and provided this link: https://www.ibm.com/support/pages/cognos-analytics-11-and-dynatrace

    Situation improved after we stopped using "deep" mode.
