  • 1.  Mobile Expense Management (MEM) won't work with iOS Devices

    Posted Thu July 05, 2018 05:19 PM
    Hello,

I have setup an Expense Plan, properly configured a "Compliance Rule" with thresholds for data usage (capture how many MB/GB is being used daily, weekly, monthly), and for some reason it does not work with any iOS devices (iPads or iPhones).

It works 100% fine with Android devices, but I can't figure out how to make it work with iOS.
When clicking on "Mobile Data Usage", or checking reports, it just reports as used 0MB.

I've tried multiple things, the iOS devices are setup the same way as the Android phones, but no results.

    Any suggestions?

Unfortunately, it is to my understanding and 2 years experience that with iOS the Maas360 APP has to be open or running in the background for this to work. If the user closes the APP manually it will not gather the data. A severe flaw in my mind as we are 100% iOS and it is not a good reporting tool as there is no consistent report I can use  for this or a way to force it.

Also, I set up data blocks after a user gets to their threshold and block cellular data on certain streaming (music and video) Apps but this seems to really jack up the device because I then fight the cellular block issues all the time, it blocks whether they are in or out of compliance.

Today, MaaS360 app gathers the data usage of the device and sends back to our portal where compliance rules can be triggered if required. However, iOS has the limitation of not waking up the app if it is manually killed by the user. If MaaS360 app is not killed manually, with background app refresh the data is uploaded to our portal once in 12 hours. If the user uses one of our PIM products, we can be assured he will launch the app frequently and usage can be captured. This is due to Apple's restriction of app cannot run in the background. In Android, apps can run in the background, which is why the data usage reporting is accurate.

I also spent a fair amount of time trying to get MEM to work with our iOS devices and had the same issues.  I was also under the impression that the source of the data use (app or browsing history) would be available for review and that is also not the case.  How am I supposed to "manage" a user with high data usage if I don't know what is causing it?

MaaS360's iOS limitations are disappointing and not well documented.
