Missing configmgr file after upgrading IBM Content Navigator from 3.0.13 to 3.0.15 on AIX 7.3

  • 1.  Missing configmgr file after upgrading IBM Content Navigator from 3.0.13 to 3.0.15 on AIX 7.3

    Posted 20 days ago

    Hello,

I am experiencing an issue during the upgrade of IBM Content Navigator from version 3.0.13 to 3.0.15 on AIX 7.3.
The installation process completes successfully and displays "IBM Content Navigator was successfully installed in the following directory /opt/IBM/ECMClient", but after the upgrade the following file is missing:
    /opt/IBM/ECMClient/configure/configmgr

This file is required to launch the Configuration Manager GUI for ICN and because it is not created during the 3.0.15 installation, so I'm unable to configure or update ICN environment.
When I uninstall ICN 3.0.15 and reinstall ICN 3.0.13, the configmgr file is present as expected.

I have already completed all required prerequisites, including the recommendations from IBM Support in the document "Providing a Java Runtime (JRE) for installing and using IBM Content Navigator 3.0.15 and later releases."
Despite this, the installer still doesn't create the configmgr tool.

Do you have any ideas or suggestions for this case?

    Hello Ivan,
    I cannot confirm that.
I installed ICN 3.0.15 IF002 on an AIX customer system, and both configmgr and the command line tool configmgr_cl are available here.
However, AIX and the configmgr  GUI in 3.0.15 are not the best of friends, which is why I used conifgmgr_cl under AIX.

    Regards
    Michael

    Hello Michael,

    Thank you for the feedback.

To clarify the situation on my side, I have a question regarding your installation procedure.
Did you install ICN 3.0.15 base first and then apply IF002, as they mentioned in the documentation, or did you directly install ICN 3.0.15 IF002 as the initial package?

In my case, I followed the prerequisites documented by IBM and ensured that the correct JRE was available before starting the installation.
I also exported the required environment variables (that is IBM Java version 8 that was installed as part of the application server.):
    export PATH=/usr/IBM/WebSphere/AppServer/java/8.0/jre/bin:$PATH and
    export JAVA_HOME=/usr/IBM/WebSphere/AppServer/java/8.0

Additionally, did you perform the installation on AIX 7.3, or on an earlier supported AIX version (7.1/7.2)?

    Best regards,
    Ivan

    Hello Ivan,

The customer is running AIX OS Level 7.2. But that shouldn't make any difference with regard to ICN installation.
You cannot install an ICN FixPack if the base version has not been installed first. The FixPack installation will abort with a corresponding error message.
We have decided not to install only the base version (CPE or ICN) for our customers unless it is expressly requested. We will wait at least until IF001 :-D

    We also use WebSphere Java.
However, with ICN 3.2 and CPE 5.7, the installer requires at least OpenJRE 11.x. This means that the WebSphere Java method no longer works and you have to install another Java environment in addition to WebSphere.

    Regards
    Michael

    Hello Michael,

I understand, thank you but I want just confirmed that we are doing the same things.

Just to clarify one important point:
    I have AIX 7300-03-00-2446.

Is it possible that the installer is treating AIX 7.3 as unsupported and therefore skipping parts of the installation, including the creation of the configmgr file?
I saw and read that ICN 3.0.15 officially supported on AIX 7.3.

    Best regards,
    Ivan

    Hello Michael,

I would like to add some additional findings that I now checked.

Below is a comparing the working ICN 3.0.13 installation package with the ICN 3.0.15 package that fails to generate configmgr on AIX 7.3

    Installation Package Comparison
I extracted both installation packages and compared their contents.

    ICN 3.0.13
    IBM_CONTENT_NAVIGATOR-3.0.13-AIX.bin
    Size: 1,322,272,202 bytes (≈ 1.32 GB)
    Date: Dec 03 2022
Result: Installation successful, configmgr file generated

    ICN 3.0.15
    IBM_CONTENT_NAVIGATOR-3.0.15-AIX.bin
    Size: 932,351,461 bytes (≈ 0.93 GB)
    Date: Dec 01 2023
Result: Installation completes, but configmgr is missing

During installation of 3.0.15, the following log entries appear:
    OSUtils.isSupportedPlatform: supported: false
    OSUtils.isSupportedPlatform: unSupported AIX: 6.1,7.1, 32|64 bit: AIX - 7.3

I hope this additional information is helpful information for you.

    Best regards,
    Ivan

    Hello Ivan,
In my opinion, it would be best if you opened a PMR with IBM Support and had them look into it.

They removed the GUI configmgr in v3.0.14 and v3.0.15, only configmgr_cl is available.

    https://www.ibm.com/support/pages/aix-and-zlinux-platforms-configmgr-tool-missing-ibm-content-navigator-icn-installation-directory

It's a bit of a mission to get the cl going, but once you've figured it out it's much better than the GUI, especially on AIX the GUI was always finicky.

All the best, hope you come right!

Hi Ivan... let me tell you about my experience.

My environment is running on AIX 7.3 and the Navigator version is 3.0.15. Like Michael, I installed it via the command line, first the base version and then applied the interim fixes.

Then, in the configuration manager directory, I edited the script /opt/IBM/ECMClient/configure/configmgr_cl to add a path to a valid JVM to run the tool:

    I changed the path: JRE_LOC="${JAVA_HOME}"/bin/java to: JRE_LOC=/usr/IBM/WebSphere/AppServer/java/8.0/bin/java

Another important thing is to edit the BASEDIR variable with the path to the configure directory of the Navigator installation, or you must navigate to that directory before running the commands. In my case, I chose to change the path to: BASEDIR=/opt/IBM/ECMClient/configure

Important: If you apply a fix to the installed version again, the previous changes will be overwritten, so you must back up the script or reconfigure it.

With these steps, I had no problems configuring the profile and completing my deployment, always via the command line.

    I hope this is helpful.

    Hello Olaf and Sergio,

Thanks for your feedback and explanations.

I managed to complete the upgrade and I have now resolved all the issues.
I can confirm that everything works correctly on the AIX 7.3 version that I mentioned earlier.

Also, upgrading to ICN 3.0.15 and then applying the ICN 3.0.15.0.7 fix pack (icn3015.007.408) resolved the problem I had with previewing .mp4 video files, including the CIWEB1060 error.

Thanks everyone again for your support.

    Best regards,
    Ivan Pakic
