  • 1.  Migrating vHMC to another HW?

    Hi,

    Anyone ever tried moving virtual HMC instance from Power HW to another?

    (LPM is supported and would work yes, but in my case there is no SAN connectivity between the HWs, so LPM is no go)

    I tried the saveupgdata / rstupgdata procedure , but that was not too high success; ended up on this:

    "

    re-installed and manually reconfigured.

    Use dd, Tommi! :-)

    Connect the HMC disk to an AIX or Linux LPAR, copy the disk's contents with dd into an image file, connect another disk, and copy the image from dd to the new disk. Then, connect the new disk to a new vHMC LPAR.

    P.S. Of course, it is not a supportable migration method, but there may be better ways. But dd should work without any problem. It only takes too much time.

    The fun thing about using vHMC on x86 is that it's the other guys problem to migrate to new hardware.  And, since he has numerous other instances to migrate he gets the technique down really good.  Plus, any idiot can do a snapshot before putting on patches/upgrades to have a fallback method if it goes bad.

    I have never done vHMC to HMC but done multiple HMC -> newer HMC. 

    The easiest way is to enable HMC replication and replicate this basic configuration. Agree, there is some manual work which you need to do before replication and after but it is not that much. 

    The other method which we did (but apparently does not work for you), do HMC backup on the old device and restore on the newer one.
