  • 1.  Migrating Cognos Content post upgrade

    Hi,

    We have upgraded from 11.1.7 to 11.2.4. Both the instances are on different servers. The new environment (11.2.4) is up and running but content has not been migrated from the old version. I know that there are two options for migrating:

    1) Export and Import from content administration 

    2) Content store data base copy

    I would like to know urgently which one is better in this case with pros & cons. Would also like to know how reports will be upgraded.

    Please suggest.

    Hi Mack,

    I just did a smaller migration from 11.1.7 to 12.0.3 yesterday. I have the same setup like you: two environments - the old one with all content and the new one is fresh and clean. 

    I used the content administration feature and exported the content in 11.1.7 and did an import on 12.0.3. During import you have the ability to choose if you'd like to automatically upgrade all report specifications to the latest version. Worked good for me but you always have to do a deep dive into the detailed messages of the import when it has finished. You can also specify if new IDs should be created for objects or the old one have to be retained.

    The con of this setup is also the pro: you may have to redo some steps regarding security. As far as I know security in capabilities is not exported and you have to remodel it step-by-step manually. It's the chance to clean it up.

    I have not ever exported the whole content store by this method  so I can't tell you what happens with the "my content" of the users. I assume you would need to export the whole content store accordingly and not single folders.

    If you would do the copy of the content store database - keep in mind that you would also copy all system settings and dispatcher configurations from the old server as well. After upgrade you need to delete the old dispatcher from the config. If you choose this way, you have to run a task in the content administration to upgrade all report specifications to the latest version.

    Hope this helps a bit. I would suggest to create a backup even of the new and empty content store so you can revert if necessary.
