I have always heard/read that it is recommended to set both the switch and server either to auto negotiate or a set speed.  Never one to one setting and the other to the other setting.  I think it has to do with some switches can't handle the situation correctly so its better to be safe than sorry.  I've had issues many, many, many years ago (  don't really want to show my age ) but not recently since I always follow this recommendation.
