After updating to MacOS Sequoia 15.1, SPSS 29 won't open and automatically crashes after clicking to open. Any solution?

Hello @João Fiuza,

What version of macOS are you upgrading from?
What version of IBM SPSS Statistics 29.0.x.x do you have?

IBM SPSS Statistics 29.0.2.0 (20) and later (IBM SPSS Statistics 30.0.0.0 (172)) are the only two releases of IBM SPSS Statistics verified as compatible with macOS 14.0 (Sonoma) and macOS 15.0 (Sequoia).

Hello @David Dwyer

I am upgrading from MacOS Sequoia 15.0.

I am currently running version IBM SPSS Statistics 29.0.1.0.

Last year I used the interim fix for Known Issue DT243265 and SPSS was running smoothly on MacOS Sequoia 15.0.

When clicking to open SPSS, the usual white rectangle appears on screen but then disappears and crashes.

I have the same problem! Mac 15.1. and SPSS Statistics 29.0.2.0. Immediately after clicking on the app, the app disappears from the dock. The program does not start!

If you had IBM SPSS Statistics version < 29.0.2.0 for macOS up and running on macOS 14.x (Sonoma) or macOS 15.x (Sequoia), you applied an interim fix listed in Known Issue DT243265.

IBM SPSS Statistics version 29.0.2.0 (20) is fully compatible with macOS 14.x (Sonoma) or macOS 15.x (Sequoia) and needs no interim fix to make it work. Please do not apply one.

IBM SPSS Statistics version 30.0.0.0 (172) is fully compatible with macOS 14.x (Sonoma) or macOS 15.x (Sequoia) and needs no interim fix to make it work. Please do not apply one.

From your description, it sounds like your update from one version of Statistics 29.0.x.x to a later version has become corrupted in some way. My best suggestion for you is to performa complete 'clean' re-install. See this technote.

Once you have IBM SPSS Statistics completely removed from your system, install IBM SPSS Statistics 29.0.2.0 (20) or a later version (e.g. 30.0.0.0 (172)).

Statistics 29.0.2.0 can be found here

Statistics 30.0.0.0 can be obtained through the regular mechanism here

Hello David,

thank you for your response. I recently upgraded my Mac to macOS Sequoia 15.1, and now I'm encountering issues with SPSS. I tried using versions 30.0.0.0 and 29.0.2.0, as you suggested, but unfortunately, neither one is working on macOS Sequoia 15.1.

When I attempt to start SPSS, I receive the following error message:

JVMJ9VM015W Initialization error for library j9gc29(2): Failed to instantiate compressed references metadata; 200M required
Error: Could not create the Java Virtual Machine.
Error: A fatal exception has occurred. Program will exit.

After this, the process exits with a sequence indicating it's "saving session" and "saving history," before closing completely. I suspect this could be a memory allocation issue but am unsure which settings need adjustment.

Do you have any further recommendations on troubleshooting this?

Thanks in advance for your assistance!

Best regards,
Sebastian

Thank you for the suggestion. However, I have already performed a complete 'clean' re-install multiple times, even using the clean_script provided by IBM. Unfortunately, this has not resolved the issue!

The error message you included is specifically something I've seen when putting one version of IBM SPSS Statistics over the top of another version - and for whatever reason, that operation is done incompletely. The sure-fire way I've always resolved such issues is with a 'clean re-install'.

The technote detailing the steps in the clean re-install is here - https://www.ibm.com/support/pages/script-completely-remove-uninstall-spss-statistics-macos

Note that there are steps in the technote
• Manually delete the SPSS Statistics installation directory.
• Edit the clean up script to supply your own user id
• Run the clean up script using 'sudo'
And there are things the script does
• Removes the user preferences from "~/Library/Preferences/com.ibm.spss*"
• Cleans out Extensions and Custom dialogs from "/Library/Application\ Support/IBM/SPSS\ Statistics"
If these directories and files still exist after you have worked through the technote and run the script, then a step was missed somewhere.

For your motivation: It does work...
You removed SPSS Statistics by dragging the application to the Trash. You see several preference files, extensions and custom dialogs remain. You need to completely remove everything "SPSS Statistics."

Dear David,

Unfortunately, SPSS still isn't working despite my efforts. I've run the script multiple times using sudo and manually checked afterward to ensure all paths and files were completely removed-no luck.

I'm using an Intel iMac, where I'm facing these issues. Interestingly, SPSS runs perfectly on a friends Apple Silicon-based MacBook with macOS Sequoia 15.1, just like it does for you.

Do you have any other recommendations?

Best regards,
Sebastian

Hi @Sebastian Krumm

Interesting. As you might have seen from my screenshot, I too am running a silicon (M3) mac. I no longer have access to an Intel mac. I'll have to ask Development or QA if they have one.

UPDATE: I talked to our SPSS Statistics Developers about this. At least one of them was running Statistics 30 (macOS) with Intel processor and macOS 15.1 (Sequoia). So this seems like dead end as a cause.

@Sebastian Krumm. I'd really like to see this one resolved. Could you please go to the Support portal and "Open a licensing" case. Detail, your problem there and mention you have been interacting with me in the SPSS Statistics Community, and I have asked you to open a case.

I have just tried SPSS 29.0.2.0 on an Intel Mac (with only 8GB or RAM) running macOS 15.1 and it opens without the error you're seeing.

It's a pain but have you tried creating a new user account on the Mac in question, logging in as that user and then trying to launch SPSS?
