LPAR move to New power 10

  • 1.  LPAR move to New power 10

    Posted Fri October 27, 2023 11:22 AM

    HI all,

We are building an new Power 10 server, new vios. new iSCSI storage, trying to find a way to copy Power 9 LPARs to the new P10.

The power 9 is the fibre channel storage.

    Thank you

Is the LPAR storage all virtualized through the vio servers? Lpm may work

Is your new iscsi storage empty? Or just new paths to older storage?

If your new storage is empty, can it connect to old servers?
If so, do so, make sure the lpar has all the needed drivers. Mirror the disks from old to new,  then try lpm.

Sorry, before final lpm, you'd need to break the mirror from the old storage

New iSCIS has no relation with the fiber channel storage, can not be mirrored in the storage level.

it cannot be mirrored at the storage level, but can the new storage connect to the old servers?
If so, use AIX to do the mirroring (zone / assign runs to the old server, mirror the disks so the storage is on both arrays. Then break off the old array from the mirror, and either LPM< or shutdown/restart onto the new P10.

As someone else pointed out, make sure all your patching is up to date to support P10.

    Hi,

I'm in the same situation and this is what i'll do in this case.

    1) Verify that LPAR (OS) is compatible with power 10 if not, update it.

    3) Create partnership between storage.

    4) On the new storage, i'll create same new lun as the old storage,  after that i'll use remote copy with consistency group for lpar disk, one consistency group by lpar

    5) On my new power i'll prepare lpar profile with network, fc channel, iscsi...

    6) i'll create host and zoning for new lpar profile on SAN.

    7) when you're ready,

    • shutdown old lpar,
    • disable remote copy (give access in RW to remote disk)
    • start lpar in normal mode on the new server.

If there is problem, shutdown new LPAR and restart old lpar, if you don't delete consistency group  you can restart it.

Don't start both new and old lpar when remote copy is on !

I'll know this is not the best method but it's works for me.

You can certainly use data migration between your old and new storage (LPAR I/O are move from the old to the new storage), and in second time LPM to migrate LPAR between Power but never give a try. If you use LPM dont forget to zone the 2 wwpn of your vfc channel. In normal function, there is only one WWPN use, but when LPM occurs the both WWPN are used.

    Regards.

*Forgot to mention that you have to create a partnership between SAN storage

thank you for you response. some questions, the fibre channel storage and iSCSI storage are totally different frame, can those be made partnerships?

are the remote copy from one of vios? we will make dual vios.  I appreciate your help.

Can you give more details from old and new systems configuration ?

In my case remote copy are not from vios, remote copy are from SAN, by FC or IP.

    Hi Virgile

the power 9 server is connected SAN via fibre channel, and new power 10 server is connect to an iSCSI storage.

the remote copy is from SAN level, is there any type of access to LUNs to make rcp?

    Thanks

Is "new iSCSI storage" another way of saying internal disks and not a SAN?

And does the "new" mean all new disks in a new enclosure?

My previous migrations were all internal disks.  Most of them involved saving to tape.  Initially physical until we migrated to all VTL.  When we migrated from Power 8 to Power 9 we got lucky and we could unplug that enclosure from the Power 8 and plug it into the Power 9 as the enclosure was compatible.

When we migrated from Power 9 to Power 10 we went from internal disks to SAN so it was back to save/restore.  But the next upgrade should be much easier.

the fibre channel storage will be sunset, we will use iSCSI and power 9 will be move to another data center after lpars migration.

    Thank you, Rob.
