LPAR Disk Path Issue- Disk Showing Only 6 Paths Instead of 8

  • 1.  LPAR Disk Path Issue- Disk Showing Only 6 Paths Instead of 8

    Posted Fri November 14, 2025 05:29 AM

    Hi all,
In my LPAR configuration, the disk should have 8 paths from 4 FCS adapters, but unfortunately, 2 paths from one FC adapter *(fcs2) are missing. Now it is showing only 6 paths. I checked, and all FCS adapters are in an available state. Please help me resolve this issue.

    Hi,

I have thought about the reasons for this and have listed them below.

    - The vFC adapter (vfchost) in question is not mapped to a physical port on the VIOS side.
    - The FCSCSI NPIV WWPN is not included in the SAN switch zoning.
    - The FCSCSI WWPN is not included in the LUN masking on the storage side.
    - On the AIX side, FCSCSI/FSCSI2 is still in the Defined state, or the configuration is old and cfgmgr has not been executed.
    - The virtual adapter definition on the HMC was mistakenly created as a "Virtual SCSI Client Adapter" instead of a "Virtual Fibre Channel (NPIV) Client Adapter."

Also, in addition to fcs0, 1, and 3, the vscsi2 device is displayed. What is the purpose of this?

    Best regards,

The vFC adapter (vfchost) in question is not mapped to a physical port on the VIOS side ----> mapped properly
    - The FCSCSI NPIV WWPN is not included in the SAN switch zoning. ------> zoning completed
    - The FCSCSI WWPN is not included in the LUN masking on the storage side. -----> yes masked
regarding vscsi2 , we added one virtual optical disk and loaded one aix image in that so it's representing through vscsi2

please check the VIOs error report and the mappign as well , and check lsnports output from VIO server ,usually indicates a problem with the fibre channel connection to storage.

If the "cfgmgr" command on the AIX partition does not bring back the fscsi devices and doesn't add paths to "lspath" or "lsmpio, you can check the Virtual I/O Server(s).

Login as padmin and execute the following command:

    lsmap -all -npiv

It will lists all mappings from the physical fcs port on the VIO server to the corresponding (virtual) fcs port on the AIX partition. The vfcmap can restore mapping that are missing.

If all mappings appear valid, physical cabling from VIOS to SAN switch, zoning & mapping should be checked.

    Hi Vivek

I'll assume that you have tried rmdev -Rdl fcs2 and cfgmgr already. Do you get any errors when you run cfgmgr -vl fscsi2?

AIX Support have shared some tools they use for investigating this type of problem.

    AIX Support Center Tools

Install the devscan tool from there and use it to probe the SAN through the adapter.

    /usr/local/bin/devscan --dev=fscsi2

That will show if fscsi2 can:

    a) talk to the switch

    b) see the target (storage) ports

    c) see the luns via those ports.

    Hi Vivek

That output points to a zoning problem in the switch. Ensure that WWPN 0xc050760c712c00fa is zoned to the relevant storage ports.

If you use LPM you will need 0xc050760c712c00fb zoned as well.

Also check LUN mapping (masking) in the storage to ensure that 0xc050760c712c00fa/b can access the luns. Otherwise you will see the target ports on that path, but not the luns.

Hi Vivek, saw your mail but can't find a reply button :-(

Looks like someone has vfcmap'ped vfchost45 to a VIOS physical port in the "wrong" SAN fabric. Unmap it from fcs8 and map to a port cabled to the domain id 0x15 switch.

    i.e. devscan --dev=fscsi2 should show:

    Local SCSI ID: 0x15xxxx

instead of what it shows now:

    Local SCSI ID: 0x140207

check my last reply please shared it yesterday , here is below

what is see from all discussions and provided output , the problem is either on the SAN switch or the storage array side/target device.  please check with your SAN Support to investigate further , please check the below IBM link .

    https://www.ibm.com/support/pages/node/6989021

before that check as i mensioned before the VIOs error report if there is errors reported related .

Another command which can be very useful is

    echo vfcs | kdb

At the end of the output it shows the mapping between the AIX virtual fibre channel adapters to the physical adapters on the VIO server(s), like in the following example.

    (0)> vfcs
NAME    ADDRESS            STATE  OPENED S_CH N_CH HOST_ADAP   PHYS   HOST
    fcs0    0xF1000B01C0728000 0x0010 0x0001 8    0    vfchost32   fcs0   spciceph010v2
    fcs1    0xF1000B01C0720000 0x0010 0x0001 8    0    vfchost33   fcs3   spciceph010v2
    fcs2    0xF1000B01C0C48000 0x0010 0x0001 8    0    vfchost32   fcs0   spciceph010v1
    fcs3    0xF1000B01C0C40000 0x0010 0x0001 8    0    vfchost33   fcs3   spciceph010v1

I would check/verify if the mapping for (AIX) fcs2 is correct.
If there is no reasonable explanation, and all other paths are working correctly, this has often helped out in our environment:

    # rmdev -Rdl fcs2
    # cfgmgr

    Hi,
From lspath command output, it looks that either fscsi2 paths were never there or it was removed intentionally , otherwise it should be enabled/missing on lspath command output. So, if this path is deleted from ODM but path is still configured from VIOS, SAN and storage side then it should come back with cfgmgr. If not, then it is definitely related with mapping, zoning or masking.

    Thanks & Regards,
    Akmal, Affan

    hi

what is see from all discussions and provided output , the problem is either on the SAN switch or the storage array side/target device.  please check with your SAN Support to investigate further , please check the below IBM link .

    https://www.ibm.com/support/pages/node/6989021

before that check as i mensioned before the VIOs error report if there is errors reported related .

    Thank you

If you're interested, one other possibility is https://github.com/cryssoft/aix_perf_tools/blob/main/hbaq which uses some other APIs.  Theoretically, you'd run it as "./hbaq -d 0" to look at fcs0 since your adapter numbers start with zero (if not, the lowest adapter would be zero for this API call anyway).  Depending on the storage array vendor and other factors, you may find a bunch of "discovered" ports and their associated data.  The last time I checked, it worked similarly on both VIO servers and clients.  I don't have an AIX box at the moment to provide examples.  I'll see what I have locally in terms of documentation, etc.
