Not just Java, but also Linux, same story.
And Windows. Although it was not free, the theory is that MS looked the other way at all of the pirated copies, because they knew it was making Windows nearly universal.

As a 40-year veteran of the platform, and a second-generation IBMer (my dad was a field engineer in large systems from 1955 to 1991), I also would like to have a "hobby mainframe" for personal use. I use the MVS 3.8j public system. It runs very well but is limited to 24-bit mode. I learned on 24-bit MVS back in college but I can't explore the true depth of zArchitecture. Like another poster said, companies take a dim view of people who crash their LPARs and very few people have an opportunity to create their own.
I'm not the first one to say this over the past 20 years but it bears repeating until it gets taken seriously: IBM should pay closer attention to what occurred starting with Java in 1995. It was free for personal use and there is no lack of Java developers today. Hundreds, maybe thousands, of open source projects since then have no problem finding qualified developers and administrators.

Slightly off-topic, but I would like to know when the ZD&T Learners Edition will be available again. When I had it, it was a great learning tool that helped me upgrade my mainframe skills, but alas, IBM discontinued it after about two years. The web page for ZD&T, https://www.ibm.com/products/z-development-test-environment, still says "Learner's Edition is currently being updated and will return soon."

Hi,
zPDT is not available directly from IBM, but from one of our partners.
I recommend contacting ITC as they are the only IBM partner SIs can use to leverage zPDT.
Best regards,
