We're expanding our iSCSI SAN (mainly used from windows servers) onto a Power6 520 (an 8203-E4A) using an IBM 1 Gigabit - TX iSCSI TOE PCI-X Adapter (pn 03N6056, fc 5713). The server is running AIX5.3 ML11.

However it seems there's no way to configure the adapter to use jumbo frames (that typically give a performance boost). The adapter is a Qlogic QLA4050C OEM adapter and on Qlogic's home page (http://www.qlogic.com/Products/SANandDataNetworking/iSCSIAdapters/Pages/QLA4050C.aspx) the adapter is mentioned to be jumbo frame capable. However I cannot find any information about the adapter supporting jumbo frames in IBM context.

Is it really correct that the adapter won't support jumbo frames under AIX? It seems to be the only TOE adapter supported under AIX for the given server using 1Gbit copper connections.

Looking at "Power Systems Managing PCI adapters" http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/powersys/v3r1m5/topic/iphcd/iphcd.pdf other adapters mention Jumbo Frame Support but this is not the case for the 5713.

It seems as if the hardware supports jumbo frames alright in the standard version, but the AIX version and/or the AIX driver does not. I guess I'll have to talk to my IBM representative...

    Thanks for the document link.
