Is it possible to desiginate a particular element in a given schema to be freeform? In other words, tell Tamino to take anything that comes down the pike for that element. Obviously, no indexing could or would be done on anything below that element.

would an element of type “any” meet your requirements?
You could probably play about with setting the attribute “processContents” to “skip” as well.
