I don't need it for a day-to-day administration, just need it to create a few LPARs (though it would be nice to have it :)

The software does make assumptions about the hardware and the type and placement of adapters and there may be other checks or more in the future. If it finds something it does not like you are in to serious hacking, Linux command line work to attempt to work around the issues.

If you are trying this as some sort of "technology stunt" for fun then OK.
But I suggest that you need to get out more and enjoy life!

If you intend running your System p machines like this then you risk zero support just when you need it.

NOt sure if that link is gonna come out .. if not, then google for hmc and vmware .. I have played with this for v7 and it works ok .. the same princple can be applied to other hardware types .. obviously, not supported and **may not work** :)

There are numerous resellers our there of refurbished equipment. I can't imagine an HMC for Power 4 is not available through one of them. One that I like is World Data Products at wdpi.com

For p5 and p6 SW for HMc image does the type and model veryfication from pc or x-server bios during install, so that is the only trick.
