Can we do it 'in-place-migration' from WAS v8 to v9 on the same nodes, just by upgrading the runtime?
yes, sort of, you can use the new "clone" process as this enables you to install the new version on the same box, side by side with the old, then cloning the configuration over. Do it using commands or the gui wizard
