  • 1.  IBM PAFE Add-ins Issue

    Ran into an issue regarding IBM Planning Analytics for Excel (PAX/PAFE) that I wanted to document for the benefit of others.

    Specific symptoms include:
    1. Although uninstalled, legacy PAFE Excel Add-ins: CognosOfficeBI and CognosOfficeTM1, remain enabled (checked on Excel Add-ins list). Even after disabling (unchecking on Excel Add-ins list) post uninstall, re-opening Excel causes each to reappear on the Excel Add-ins list in an enabled but non-functional state.
    2. Although enabled (checked on Excel Add-ins list), the current PAFE ribbon tab does not appear after the startup of Excel.
    After working through other approaches, the solution that resolves both above is to open Registry Editor and navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Excel\Options, and:
    1. Remove registry entries named "OPEN*" referencing (A) above. This permanently removes the uninstalled add-ins from the Excel startup process and the add-ins list.
    2. Excel stops scanning for Add-ins to open during Excel startup when it encounters an "OPEN*" entry with (blank) data. Modify "OPEN*" registry entries so there are no (blank) values. Additionally, the list of add-ins shown in the registry must be continuous e.g. OPEN -> OPEN1 -> OPEN2, etc. rather than discontinuous OPEN -> OPEN2 -> OPEN4, etc.

    Hi,

    What version of PAFE would you like to install??

    Are you aware, that starting from the 2.0.65 version you have to manually add .xll file to Excel Add-ins?

    Downloading and upgrading to Planning Analytics for Microsoft Excel with a single .xll add-in for versions 2.0.65 and later - IBM Documentation

    Similiarly, If you have a version prior to 2.0.65, you have to use "uninstall" program, but it you have a latest version you have to manually remove old Add-Inns in Excel and add new one.

    We have had this problem when users have manually added the those files as add-ins to Excel to use formulas in the previous version.  

    With Excel add-ins, just locate the file and delete it or rename it (if you have access to).  When you re-open Excel, it will say something about being unable to locate the file, then go to add-ins and Excel add-ins and uncheck.  This will remove it permanently.

    Please note, this is not recommended for COM Add-ins! ;-)

    Post PAfE 65, we took a very simple approach - I just rename the addin before we distribute it to users machines.  I name it a generic name (like "PAx Addin.xll"), then distribute that file to the end users.  It's seamless on the user side because for them, the name of the addin doesn't change - they don't have to take any action or play with the add-ins in Excel, and have the updated versions.
