IBM Cognos for Microsoft Office not working as expected

    I got the Cognos add in for MS Office installed today and on testing it, it is allowing me to create a connection to the Cognos server using the Cognos portal  url but the right pane in the XL document which is supposed to show the cognos content (my content, Team Content) is blank.

    The Cognos version I am using is 11.1.7 and office is 365. I have also played around with 'options' available in the Ribbon but could not get it working.

    Please suggest.

    Hi,

    I just checked the Supported Environments page for 11.1.7, and Office 365 is a supported version for Cognos for MS Office. There are some notes that you might want to check out:

    Please note that the bit version of Office which you are running must match the bit version of Cognos for Microsoft Office installed. If you are running 32bit Microsoft Office, you must install the 32bit version of Cognos for Microsoft Office.

    Cognos Office Connection integration is only supported on Windows platforms.

    32-bit and 64-bit supported
    To use IBM® Cognos® for Microsoft Office after the 2021 update, you must install Microsoft .NET Framework 4.8 or later and the IBM Cognos for Microsoft Office components.
    I'm guessing the last part might be relevant - you need .NET Framework 4.8 or later installed.

    Quick sanity check - you did configure your gateway URL then go through the sign-in process, right? Did the authentication process go through ok?

    Hi Mark,

    The authentication process is going ok as evident when using the 'Connection' and 'Open' links in the ribbon above. On authentication from the 'Open'

    link, I get to enter the credentials but it simply opens up the Cognos portal and if I close the portal the dialog box box appears (second image). The pane on the extreme right which is supposed to display cognos content is still empty.

    Hi,

    What specific URL did you enter into the configuration when you set up the connection to your CA instance gateway? Was it in the form

    https://<servername>:<port>/bi/v1/disp 

    If not, try using this form of URL. You will need to substitute your server name or IP address, and the port CA is using for the gateway. It's possible also that yours might be configured as http rather than https - do you have the ability to launch Cognos Configuration on your server and check the Gateway URI to see how it has been set?

    Hello Mack,

    Could it be that you are using the same connection URL that you use to start Cognos on your browser?

    Then try this instead:

    https://[your normal string]/v1/disp/

    Also: When starting up, you need first click the connect button, and only after succesful login, click the big blue button IBM Cognos for Microsoft Office. When doing it the other way round it will give you issues.

    And finally it may be wise to check a general MS Office setting when you are using multiple screens. In the Office settings you can find under general this setting for user Interface options, and set it to 'Optimize for compatibility'.

    Thank you Mark/Han/Karas, 

    Your Suggestions helped me overcome the above problem i.e., display of cognos content in the IBM Pane on the right.

    I modified the URL as suggested by you and adjusted the settings in Excel app to Compatibility mode. I am now able to see objects in the pane but I am facing another hurdle. When I click on the plus sign to view the cognos content, I am prompted for credentials and when I enter them, I get no response (see screenshots). Not able to go beyond this. Please suggest.

    How is authentication set up on your Cognos Analytics instance? Are you using Single Sign On (SSO)? I found an article that covers resolving endless authentication loops in Cognos for MS Office with SSO, but not sure if this is your situation?

    Thank you for the suggestion. I will surely try it out but a question please - does Cognos for microsoft office have its own version that should be compatible with the version of Cognos that is being used?. Please let me know.

    We are using Cognos 11.1.7 and I am trying out the Cognos for MS office app on my device after getting the software from the IBM portal by the admin.

    There are no specific versions of the plug-in for corresponding versions of CA.

    Hi Mark,

    I tried what you suggested i.e., setting the  'Allow session information to be shared between client applications? property to true in Cognos Configuration but still have the same problem when I click the plus sign in the right pane, getting prompted again for credentials and on entering the credentials and logging in, nothing happens. Please suggest if I can try anything else.

    Another thing observed is that the above happens when I try one url (we have two urls that point to the same cognos server). When I try the second url (took care to use the ....... /v1/Disp format), I get the following error:

    AAA-AUT-0013:  The User is already authenticated in all available namespaces
