We are currently closing one data center and opening up another, as part of this move to our new shiny DC we are putting in Hyper-converge infrastructure.

Just getting my head around what it actually is, and the next steps of how do we recharge it, as it doesn't first appear to fit into the standard towers

Was wondering has anyone got Hyper-converge and how did you approach this

Hyper-Converge Infrastucture (HCI) is virtualisation technology, it virtualises what would otherwise be physical components of your infrastructure (e.g. servers, storage, networking etc) creating a software based environment rather than a physical one. Also worth noting that this technology still needs to run physical servers. 

The way I would re-charge it is by allocating the cost to all the components that are being virtualised by the technology (weighting by standard methods e.g. CPU's, Storage Space, Tier, OS if you chose to), assuming that you have the data to support this. If not, then speak to your ifrastructure teams, they should be able to advise on how you can identify which parts of the CMDB are using HCI technology.

The third option (which is the last resort really) is to simply allocate this cost to your Data Center and spread the cost to all your infrastructure hosted in the Data Center.

I would be interested in hearing from others who are using this technology and have managed to recharge it.

As always data is going to be key to this, I'm lucky in that space as those putting this in are being very mindful of Apptio and recharge, so including us all the way.

LOL!  Hi Claire, I'm going to echo you to a tee!  We are in exactly the same situation!  Our Infra Operations team wants to report on hyper converged infrastructure that they are already rolling out, so we will be developing a reporting solution for them next year.  I, like you, know very little (almost nothing!) about this, so this will be a learning experience!  Thank heavens for our Apptio Managed Services team who is very knowledgeable about this technology and will be assisting in the requirements gathering, report design, etc.

:-) :-) why do they do this to us. Keeps us on our toes though.  Can forsee a lot of conversations with our Apptio Managed Services team also and will echo you thank goodness for them.
