  • 1.  How to switch to Community Edition with minimal efforts?

    Posted Tue January 28, 2025 10:24 AM

    Could you please advice...

We have 6 VMs with DB2 11.1.4.4 (db2wse) used as local staging/test environment. Due to cutting cost process we need to release all these licenses and switch to Community Edition. We are fine with restrictions of CE - anyway test VMs has less resources than specified in restrictions.

But how to do that with minimal efforts? License from Db2 Express-C 11.1 does not match it, so I cannot just install other *.lic file.

Where to take *.lic file for Community Edition of 11.1.*? I checked all packages we used to install it - there are no any files related to "db2dec" product-id, tried "db2expc_uw.lic" file from package - no way, it is reporting LIC1450I error.

Seems the only option left - uninstall current DB2WSE, then install DB2 Express-C and attach all databases again?...

Just curious - if a simpler way exists?

Db2 V11.1 is out of support - so why do you bother?

Perhaps - if you can find installable image of this back level 11.1 Community Edition, you can remove your current WSE license (using db2licm -r) command and add CE license from installable image of CE (using db2licm -a command)?

    Thank you.

Ya, exactly - "if"! :) We were using DB2 since version 7.x and I checked all packages I only found - no way. No any occurrences of db2dec.lic file there or any *.lic which even contains "Community" word.

Btw, you mentioned "Db2 V11.1 is out of support - so why do you bother?" - could you please elaborate that a little?

Theoretically, does it mean that we can keep using Db2WSE licenses and not included such into a payment for service agreement? Like change in report "12" to "6" and pay only for 6 licenses on production sites? ;)

    Dmitry,

All db2 v11.1 have the same codebase. So, there is no need to reinstall db2.

You need db2dec.lic v11.1 file, and this file can be successfully applied with the db2licm utility.

I'm not sure if I'm eligible to share this file, but you may ask here someone from IBM for this.

Regular db2 11.1 fix pack doesn't include this license file unfortunately, but you may try to find db2 v11.1 express-c package to extract this license from it. The link is still available and can be easily googled...

    Thank you.

We were using DB2 since version 7.x and I checked all packages I only found - no way. No any occurrences of db2dec.lic file there or any *.lic which even contains "Community" word.

However, all fix packs includes a bunch of *.lic files (but all of them includes db2expc_uw.lic - for Express-C despite the fact that fixpacks cannot be applied to Express-C).

Ya, I already made lot of attempts with db2licm -r and db2licm -a - only original db2wse lic was applied successfully, all other options (including Express-C) were rejcted.

Then, I tried to uninstall db2wse (11.1.4.7) and install Express-C (11.1.4.4) and re-attach all databases but got problem with packages compatibility - error

SQL20249N  for package named "NULLID.SYSSH200". I tried lot of options but seems that is not possible to solve. So, perhaps I have to rollback my test vm to previous state with db2wse, backup all 20 databases, drop them, then re-do re-install exercise and then try to restore all databases from backups...

Please send me your e-mail addess at: jan.m.nelken@gmail.com.

Db2 V11.1 is out of support since April 30, 2022:

    https://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21168270

My question was: why bother with almost 3 years out of support version - when you can download current supported version (including Community Edition)?
