  • 1.  How to review formula for a published perspective?

    Posted Sun November 03, 2019 11:11 PM

Troubleshooting a reporting component often involves working backwards from the datapath to understand how it is composed together, and then investigating the individual items for data / config issues.

This is quite straight forward when the inputs are from a Modelled object (Cost Source, Servers, Applications et. al.) or Metrics (Cost, Payables, Server Count et. al.) ... because you can review their formula in a straight forward manner, and continue back-paddling till you get to the data/config issue.

However, when the input is from a perspective ... one hits a block, as there appears to be no straight forward way to review the formula for a perspective. So, what's the best practice to review the formula for a perspective?

@Jaitabh Jewel Sharma, create a test report with any cost object in your model. Choose any of the columns from the object and place it in the "Rows" section. Then put the perspective you want to review the formula in the "Values" section. Highlight the column of the perspective and you will see the formula along the formula bar. You can edit and save this perspective's formula by clicking on the 'Check mark' icon and then save the test report.

    Formua bar in Perspectives

In order to implement the new formula, drag the perspective back to the 'Perspective' section and that perspective will be ready for check-in. Check in this perspective (you do not have to check in the test report) and it will take effect once the check in is complete.

@Tony Wong ... thanks for sharing this.

Whilst this approach works (and that's the way I've done it in the past); i find it to be quite tedious to do such a test report/component each time, just to be able to view a formula.

I agree, @Jaitabh Jewel Sharma. Somehow certain features like this one regresses in R12. I personally don't like it either to have to go through these steps just to view the formula.

Thank you @Tony Wong.  I didn't know how to do this either (although I do agree it seems a little tedious  )
