  • 1.  How to open a document by default in client application?

    Posted Tue June 01, 2021 02:28 PM

    Hi,

I would like to know if there is an option to configure in order to open a document directly in a client application (e.g. open a PDF directly in Adobe PDF instead of viewer) and set as fallback the viewer ?

I only found information about configuring the Viewer:

    https://www.ibm.com/docs/en/content-navigator/3.0.x?topic=ccnwc-configuring-viewers-used-display-documents-in-web-client

    Thank you!

    Ana

    Ana

You are looking in the right place, but not quite understanding the options. For each ICN desktop you can create a Viewer mapping. This mapping using mimetypes identifies which viewer/application should be used to open which mimetypes. And if for some reason the selected viewer/application doesn't work, as a fall back, ICN will always then try opening the document in the Daeja viewer.

So, for your use case, in ICN admin desktop,

    1. Click Viewer Map
    2. Create a Viewer Map that uses the Adobe Reader for the mimetype application/pdf
    3. Update the desktop used by the end users to use this viewer map

    rhildebr,

    Thank you for your response!

The problem must be with EdgeChromium (I didn't check in GoogleChrome - we don't use it).

I change the viewer mapping to open the PDFs with Acrobat Reader. But in Edge, when I click to open a PDF, ICN creates a viewport similarly when I am opening the PDF with the browser. But I would like to somehow force it to open with the client application. Do you think I can achieve this with a setting in ICN, or is it something I must change in the browser?

In Firefox, the PDFs open with the client application, but at the same time ICN shows an empty viewer window.

    Thank you!

You're half way there! Go into Edge settings and enable Always download PDF files. Then go into Windows file associations and associate Adobe Reader with PDF's as the default application.

Then it'll download it and when they click on it it'll open with Adobe Reader. It's not a 'one click' though.

    Hi Brent,

Unfortunately I don't find the setting you are mentioning in Edge. I have tried the option from Settings -> Site permissions -> PDF documents: Always open PDF files externally.

With this setting enabled, when I try to open PDFs in ICN I am getting in the viewer the message: "This content is blocked. Contact the site owner to fix the issue."

So, I am not sure what is going wrong here.

In the console of the browser I also get a message in red: "Refused to frame '' because it violates the following Content Security Policy directive: "default-src 'self' blob: https:". Note that 'frame-src' was not explicitly set, so 'default-src' is used as a fallback."

Note: this is happening in our dev environment, where ICN is indeed unsecured on http.

I have tested this setting for SharePoint (opened in Edge), and when I click a PDF, it appears in a toolbar at the bottom of the page, with the options to Open or Save.

That is the setting in Edge.

The viewer map should have the viewer as Web Browser, not Adobe Reader. Adobe Reader only works for IE.

Hopefully the viewer map change fixes the other errors.

    Thank you!

Yes, with the viewer as Web Browser, it works.

Do you happen to know if there are same settings I can configure in Edge so that I can have the same behavior for text and image files? :D

In the viewer map I have Web browser for All types now.
