  • 1.  How to Filter out Null values in a 11.1.7 CA Dashboard Filter

    Posted Mon February 08, 2021 09:31 AM
I have a CA dashboard with a customer field that has about 2500 distinct values.  There are some Null entries.  The user is trying to  filter out the null records but the filter experience does not permit you to scroll to the bottom nor can I find a way to use the Find to identify the Null entries.  I have tried Null, No value and (No value).   (No value) is what shows up in visualizations for NULL.

I don't want to create a calc field because that will make the drill-throughs useless.  Any ideas?

If there are more values in the query item than can fit into the filter dialog there should be a message saying 'Not all items are shown'. If that isn't being shown, then there is a defect.

I know that there was a similar defect in 11.0.13 and previous releases. It is fixed in the 11.1.x stream.

Even with that fix, you would not be able to access the null value, which would be at the end of the list.

You would need to create a filter in the module. You would not be able to do so directly in the dashboard.

You have the option of making the filter embedded, which would mean that it would always operate on the query subject, or selectable. If you choose the latter approach, you could create the filter either as a Stand-alone filter or as a Query subject filter.

In the module, if you select the query subject, you should be able to create a filter expression via the manage filters context menu item. This would allow you to create an embedded filter. If you select the query subject and choose filter,  then you can create a selectable query subject filter expression. A third alternative would be to create a stand-alone filter.

More information about filters would be in the documentation and in this blog article.

    Thanks for the response..

I just looked at something similar  in 11.0.13, and the (no value) is on the top:

I believe this should be solved in the table/modelling.
Why are you having NULL values in the dimension. It isn't good practice to have NULL values in dimensions. All empty/NULL should have a dummy value, eg. Unknown. I always tell my engineers to use dummy values, instead of NULL in the dimensions.
Here is some documentation you can show the engineers, if they don't agree:
