  • 1.  How to display data with a boxplot

    Posted Tue March 09, 2021 03:20 AM

Suppose I measure the height of a group of men and a group of women. I now have data for two variables: HEIGHT and GENDER. I can create various graphs with HEIGHT on the Y axis and GENDER on the X axis. But I can't figure out how to get SPSS to display a table of information about HEIGHT showing the different values (e.g., mean, median, range, etc.) by GENDER. All I can do is get it to display this information solely about the aggregate values for HEIGHT. I can get it to display the information visually (e.g., in a boxplot), but then I have to guess at what exactly the numbers are. How do I get SPSS to actually tell me these numbers?

On easy way to do this is with the SUMMARIZE procedure - Analyze > Reports > Case Summaries

Many thanks! Very helpful. If you'll pardon my being greedy, is there another way as well, in case I want data that this way doesn't provide (e.g., interquartile range)? Good to have more than one arrow in my quiver here.

There are quite a few commands in Statistics that can do this. Another one to look at is Analyze > Descriptive Statistics > Explore. Its output includes the IQR among other statistics. See also Analyze > Tables > Custom Tables and Analyze > Compare Means > Means.

If you haven't explored editing pivot tables, try double clicking one and selecting Pivot > Pivot Trays. This allows you to rearrange the dimensions of a table, so you can position statistics, group info, and variables in different ways to suit your purpose.

Happy to help. You might want to explore the Case Studies and Tutorials available via Help > Topics. Meantime, good luck.
