  • 1.  How to combine two scales with different answer options

    Posted Mon June 07, 2021 12:41 PM

    Hey there!

I want to measure a construct with two subscales.

    The first subscale is measured with a 6-point Likert-scale (0=0 person, 1=1 person, 2=2 persons, 3=3-4 persons, 4= 5-8 persons, 5=9 or more persons).
The second subscale is also measured with a 6-point Likert-scale (0=never....5=always).

I would like to combine those two subscales to one scale. Since the answer options differ between the scales, I was wondering if I could combine them or not.

Thank you so much for your help!

What would a combined scale mean?  The two subscales seem to be unrelated.  What do you plan to do with these?

    Hi Jon,

thank you very much for your reply! I want to measure isolation. The first subscale measures social isolation and the second subscale measures domestic isolation. I would like to combine those two subscales (social isolation & domestic isolation) to one scale (isolation). My goal is to find out what impact isolation has on other constructs like depression, loneliness and so on. I am just not sure if I can combine those two scales because of the different answer options.

It seems to me that combining these variables up front would be premature unless you are sure that their effects are the same.  Maybe include them separately in modeling and then if they seem to have the same effect, some combination might be appropriate.

Hi, Lena. Yes they can be combined in a variety of ways; the question (as always!) is what the result means :) .

I would recommend that you look at scaling procedures such as multidimensional unfolding (PREFSCAL). It can handle as few as 2 variables.

I am not familiar with the multidimensional unfolding but I will look into it. Thank you for the advice!

If you look at PREFSCAL, you might find the Case Study on unfolding helpful.  You can access it here
