How to automate backup EMC NAS with permission

  • 1.  How to automate backup EMC NAS with permission

    Posted Wed March 22, 2017 09:12 AM

    Hi All,

Need your help we are using Tsm 5.5 version, we have given the assignment of taking whole NAS backup one time and after that incremental backup. Where tsm is installed that is on ABC.com domain and NAS is on XYZ .Com domain while I am trying to map the shared path and take the backup from ba client it is giving me error of NT permission after that I have put the string on .Opt file to ignore the permission result is I am able to take the backup from ba client but as a test when I tried to restore those files from ba client I am able to do it but same permission is not restored of backed up folder. Pls help me on 2 things how to backup so that all the permission should intact and how to automate in the batch file what syntax I have to enter UNC path I have to enter that is sure but what will be the full syntax if anyone can provide the sample that will a great help.

    Regards

here is the error if i remove the syntax from .opt file skipntpermissions yes. If I don't remove it then restoration doesn't work as expected.

The Client scheduler service and Client have to run in a user context With Access rights in XYZ.com domain.

If there is no domain trust, you could install the Client scheduler on a member server in XYZ.com domain and run the Scheduler service in a domain user context With appropriate NAS Access rights.

    Espen,

Thanks for the prompt reply, we have one way trust from xyz.com to abc.com then I don't think we need to install the client and scheduler on xyz.com one and another thing is why permission is not intact while restoring as I said when i change the string on .opt file skipntpermissions yes that allows me to take the backup but while restoring the permission is not intact as earlier.

Are you accessing NAS file server data via CIFS? If yes, here is explanation:

File and directory security information might
be inaccessible when the Windows account performing the
backup is not a member of the Domain Administrators group
of the domain the NAS file server is a trusted member of.
It is also possible that these security access failures
might prevent the entire file or directory from being
    backed up.

As a workaround you can use "skipntpermissions yes" but see the NOTE in below technote:

    http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21577225

Are you still running a very old age version (5.5). Let have to upgrade to latest version.

Use the $<name>-root share on the NAS when doing backup and restore.

    Espen,

If my NAS file server IP is below and I wanted to automate this from batch file and wanted to exclude few folders inside the root how can I exclude it.

    Sample of batch file.

    Dsmc incremental \\10.50.20.58\c$

    Exclude dir "\\10.50.20.58\ common"

That will be fine or I need to add something else also.

You have to put the exclusion in dsm.opt.

    exclude.dir "\\10.50.20.58\c$\common"

    Bharat and Espen,

Thanks for the response and guidance from which user I am trying to take backup that is not a domain Admin but it has a file server admin right I am able to map any folder which is created on NAS. Bharat the article you shared it has indication of permission issue but that doesn't say anywhere you only need domain admin rights the problem is we have to present the case where clearly mention for NAS backup you need domain admin rights even I can understand technically when I enter skipntpermision in opt file that allow me to take backup which clearly indicate that is a permission issue. if any can help to share some reference where it says you need domain admin rights only.

You doesn't need domain admin rights. You need local administrator rights on the NAS "server". Usually you can start Computer Manager from a Windows server, Connect to the NAS "server", and add the TSM service account to the local administrator group. This may require that the NAS "server" has a domain computer account.

I believe provided document link is enough to say permission issue and what permission require.

" This problem occurs if Tivoli Storage Manager client is not being run with a domain user account and/or that the privileges are not set up to allow the backup to run."

Unfortunately this is very old version (5.5) so hard to find any document now.

    Hi Bharat/Espen,

Thanks for the information after that adding file server admin group into NAS server local admin group now I am able to take the backup since I was making so many changes I can see now 2 different issues also one tcp ip port is changed I don't know how although I updated the same from setopt tcpport 1500 command as well from opt file still port value is very strange.

    Server TCP/IP port number: 1502839275416

this is what coming while running q sys and one more thing backup speed is very slow it's moving in KB's . Please advice.

    Hi Expert,

Still I am not rescued fully I have automated everything now everything is working fine except speed of the backup.I am attaching the log file for reference I am surprised 1 GB is copied in full day backup is happening extremely slow you can count speed is totally dead. I have mounted C$ of NAS into TSM windows server from that server only TSM server and NAS both are on same subnet and connected with 1 GB Switch speed.

Pls anyone can help what I am doing wrong why it is taking time.
